Microglia and astrocyte responses to neuropathogenic protozoan parasites [PDF]

open access: yesFaculty Reviews, 2021
Cerebral toxoplasmosis and cerebral malaria are two important neurological diseases caused by protozoan parasites. In this review, we discuss recent findings regarding the innate immune responses of microglia and astrocytes to Toxoplasma and Plasmodium infection. In both infections, these tissue-resident glial cells perform a sentinel function mediated

Neuropathogenic human coronaviruses: A review

open access: yesReviews in Medical Virology, 2020
SummaryHuman Coronaviruses (HCoVs) have long been known as respiratory viruses. However, there are reports of neurological findings in HCoV infections, particularly in patients infected with the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) amid Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic.

Necroptosis of neuronal cells is related to the neuropathology of tick-borne encephalitis

open access: yesVirus Research, 2022
Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a zoonotic virus that causes tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in humans. Infections of Sapporo-17-Io1 (Sapporo) and Oshima 5-10 (Oshima) TBEV strains showed different pathogenic effects in mice.

Changes in transmission of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) in England inferred from seroprevalence data

open access: yeseLife, 2023
The factors leading to the global emergence of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) in 2014 as a cause of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in children are unknown. To investigate potential changes in virus transmissibility or population susceptibility, we measured the ...

Paired immunoglobulin-like receptor B is an entry receptor for mammalian orthoreovirus

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Mammalian orthoreovirus (reovirus) infects most mammals and is associated with celiac disease in humans. In mice, reovirus infects the intestine and disseminates systemically to cause serotype-specific patterns of disease in the brain.

Study of BBB Dysregulation in Neuropathogenicity Using Integrative Human Model of Blood–Brain Barrier

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2022
The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is a cellular and physical barrier with a crucial role in homeostasis of the brain extracellular environment. It controls the imports of nutrients to the brain and exports toxins and pathogens.

A novel PCR protocol for detection and differentiation of neuropathogenic and non-neuropathogenic equid alphaherpesvirus 1 [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, 2019
Equid alphaherpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) infections can have a major impact on the horse industry and equine welfare by causing abortion or respiratory or neurologic disease. A single nucleotide polymorphism (A 2254 →G 2254 ) in open reading frame (ORF) 30 ...

Visna Virus dUTPase Is Dispensable for Neuropathogenicity [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 1998
ABSTRACT The major part of the dUTPase-encoding region of the visna virus genome was deleted. Intracerebral injection of the mutant virus resulted in a somewhat reduced viral load compared to that resulting from injection of the wild type, especially in the lungs, but the neuropathogenic effects were comparable.

T cell deficiency precipitates antibody evasion and emergence of neurovirulent polyomavirus

open access: yeseLife, 2022
JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) causes progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a life-threatening brain disease in immunocompromised patients. Inherited and acquired T cell deficiencies are associated with PML.

Study of Usutu virus neuropathogenicity in mice and human cellular models.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2020
Usutu virus (USUV), an African mosquito-borne flavivirus closely related to West Nile virus, was first isolated in South Africa in 1959. USUV emerged in Europe two decades ago, causing notably massive mortality in Eurasian blackbirds.
