On Neutralization of Charged Black Holes

open access: yes, 2019
For non-spinning, charged (Reissner–Nordström) black holes, the particles with an opposite sign of charge with respect to that of the black hole will be pulled into the black hole by the extra electromagnetic force.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Anti-aggregation self-assembled monolayers enable high-performance and scalable perovskite solar cells

open access: yesNature Communications
Stable self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), such as (2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)) ethylphosphonic acid (2PACz), are crucial for reducing interfacial energy loss in high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs).

State Neutrality [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This article attempts to spell out the main tenets of the principle of state neutrality and to explain how they hang together. It examines the central objections, and explores revisions that may enhance the theory's defensibility. Specifically, it discusses neutrality as non-discrimination, neutrality as shared reasons, objections to liberal neutrality,

Neutral syndrome

open access: yesNature Human Behaviour, 2020
Neutral models of evolution assume the absence of natural selection. Formerly confined to ecology and evolutionary biology, neutral models are spreading. In recent years they've been applied to explaining the diversity of baby names, scientific citations, cryptocurrencies, pot decorations, literary lexica, tumour variants and much more besides.

Ultracold neutral plasmas [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2002
Ultracold neutral plasmas occupy an exotic regime of plasma physics in which electrons form a swarming, neutralizing background for ions that sluggishly move in a correlated manner. Strong interactions between the charged particles give rise to surprising dynamics such as oscillations of the average kinetic energy during equilibration and extremely ...

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Deep Learning-Enabled Flexible PVA/CNPs Hydrogel Film Sensor for Abdominal Respiration Monitoring

open access: yesGels
In this study, a flexible hydrogel film sensor based on the intermixing of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and biomass-derived carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) was prepared and microstructures were constructed by replicating sandpaper templates on its surface.

Spinel/Post-spinel engineering on layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

open access: yeseScience, 2021
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted much scientific interest for use in large-scale energy storage systems because sodium is cheaper than lithium.

A single mutation in the envelope protein modulates flavivirus antigenicity, stability, and pathogenesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The structural flexibility or 'breathing' of the envelope (E) protein of flaviviruses allows virions to sample an ensemble of conformations at equilibrium.
