Finding a Place for New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in Biomedical Research

open access: yes
New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) can greatly contribute to the Replacement and Reduction of animal experiments in biomedical science. However, while NAMs have seen considerable investment and adoption in toxicology, this growth has not found a parallel in  basic and translational biomedical research.

Potentiation effects of the positive allosteric modulator PTC‐174 on NMDA receptors in neonatal male rat substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 21, Page 6481-6500, November 2026.
Abstract Background and Purpose Positive allosteric modulators bind to secondary binding sites on the receptor and alter receptor conformation and activation, changing agonist potency and efficacy. PTC‐174 is a novel NMDA receptor positive allosteric modulator that particularly enhances activity of receptors containing GluN2C or GluN2D subunits.

Developing a feasible fast-track testing method for developmental neurotoxicity studies: alternative model for risk assessment of micro- and nanoplastics

open access: yesFrontiers in Toxicology
Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are widespread environmental pollutants that pose significant health risks. They originate from industrial processes, consumer products, and environmental degradation, inducing oxidative stress through cellular dysfunctions

Advances in 3D Bioprinting for Breast Cancer Modeling: Tumor Microenvironment, Metastasis, and Drug Screening

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 15, Issue 39, 23 October 2026.
Three‐dimensional bioprinting transforms breast cancer modeling from simple constructs into spatially organized, multicellular, perfused, and patient‐derived platforms. This review shows how bioinks, cellular composition, architecture, and flow govern tumor behavior and drug response, while revealing why complexity alone is insufficient without ...

Transforming Brain Organoids Into Functional Platforms: Convergence of Engineering, Imaging, AI, and Ethics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 58, 19 October 2026.
Brain organoids are emerging as increasingly functional human‐relevant platforms, yet limitations in vascularization, maturation, measurement, and reproducibility still constrain their translational value. This Perspective examines how microfluidics, biofabrication, advanced imaging, electrophysiology, multimodal AI, standardization, and ethical ...

An integrated new approach methodology for inhalation risk assessment of safe and sustainable by design nanomaterials

open access: yesEnvironment International
The production and use of nanomaterials (NMs) has increased over the last decades posing relevant questions on their risk after release and exposure of the population or sub-populations. In this context, the safe and sustainable by design (SSbD) approach

Implementation of the In Vitro Seizure Liability Assay (iLAseizure) in Drug Discovery and Development: Mechanism of Action Case Studies

open access: yesPharmacology Research &Perspectives, Volume 14, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Central nervous system (CNS) liabilities remain a significant cause of attrition during small molecule drug development. We previously developed the in vitro seizure liability assay (iLAseizure), a new approach methodology (NAM) comprising a human induced pluripotent stem cell neuron microelectrode array (MEA) assay coupled with a panel of ...
