Soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans Maupas as a convenient model organism to study anthelmintic activity of plant extracts [PDF]
The article deals with the study of the possibility to use free-living soil nematode C. elegans in researches of anthelmintic activity of plant raw material. A. sativum juice and aqueous extract of T. vulgare flowers were used in experiments. It is shown

Molecular adsorption study of nicotine and caffeine on the single-walled carbon nanotube from first principles [PDF]
Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic structures and binding properties of nicotine and caffeine adsorbed on single-walled carbon nanotubes to determine whether CNTs are appropriate for filtering or sensing nicotine and caffeine molecules. We find that caffeine adsorbs more strongly than nicotine.

Tetra‐ortho‐Azobenzenes (TOABs) in broad daylight: in recent years, TOAB photoswitches became indispensable tools for all‐visible‐light manipulation of chemistry, biology and materials. This review explores their unique photochemical properties, design and synthetic approaches, offering support in choosing a TOAB for a given application.

Single Molecule Transistor based Nanopore for the detection of Nicotine [PDF]
A nanopore based detection methodology was proposed and investigated for the detection of Nicotine. This technique uses a Single Molecular Transistor (SMT) working as a nanopore operational in the Coulomb Blockade regime. When the Nicotine molecule is pulled through the nanopore area surrounded by the Source(S), Drain(D) and Gate electrodes, the charge

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptors of the parasitic nematode Ascaris suum: formation of two distinct drug targets by varying the relative expression levels of two subunits. [PDF]
Parasitic nematodes are of medical and veterinary importance, adversely affecting human health and animal welfare. Ascaris suum is a gastrointestinal parasite of pigs; in addition to its veterinary significance it is a good model of the human parasite ...

Agonist activation of a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor [PDF]
How does an agonist activate a receptor? In this article I consider the activation process in muscle nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChRs), a prototype for understanding the energetics of binding and gating in other ligand-gated ion channels. Just as movements that generate gating currents activate voltage-gated ion channels, movements at binding ...

Silent agonists for α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
We discuss models for the activation and desensitization of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) and the effects of efficacious type II positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) that destabilize α7 desensitized states. Type II PAMs such as PNU-120596 can be used to distinguish inactive compounds from silent agonists, compounds that produce little ...
