Comparative phylogeny of rrs and nifH genes in the Bacillaceae [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 1999
The rrs (16S rDNA) gene sequences of nitrogen-fixing endospore-forming bacilli isolated from the rhizosphere of wheat and maize were determined in order to infer their phylogenetic position in the Bacillaceae. These rhizosphere strains form a monophyletic cluster with Paenibacillus azotofixans, Paenibacillus polymyxa and Paenibacillus macerans.

Nucleotide sequence of the gene encoding the nitrogenase iron protein (nifH) of Azospirillum brasilense and identification of a region controlling nifH transcription

Molecular Genetics and Genomics, 1989
The DNA sequence was determined for the Azospirillum brasilense nifH gene and part of the nifD gene. The nifH gene is 885 bp long and encodes 293 amino acid residues. The region upstream of the nifH open reading frame contains a putative promoter whose sequence shows perfect homology with promoters of other diazotrophic bacteria and two putative ...

Frameshifts close to the Klebsiella pneumoniae nifH promoter prevent multicopy inhibition by hybrid nifH plasmids

Molecular and General Genetics MGG, 1987
Certain multicopy plasmids bearing promoter sequences of nitrogen fixation (nif) genes inhibit expression of chromosomal genes in Nif+ Klebsiella pneumoniae, hence leading to a Nif- phenotype. This 'multicopy inhibition' has been attributed to the titration of the nif-specific activator protein NifA by the plasmid-borne promoter sequences.
