Quantitative Analysis of nifH Genes and Transcripts from Aquatic Environments
2005The availability of fixed inorganic nitrogen often plays a fundamental role in regulating primary production in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Because biological nitrogen fixation is an important source of nitrogen in marine environments, the study of N2-fixing microorganisms is of fundamental importance to our understanding of global ...

Detection and quantification of the nifH gene in shoot and root of cucumber plants
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 2006A real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was applied to quantify the nifH gene pool in cucumber shoot and root and to evaluate how nitrogen (N) supply and plant age affect the nifH gene pool. In shoots, the relative abundance of the nifH gene was affected neither by different stages of plant growth nor by N supply.

Diversity of Frankia in soil assessed by Illumina sequencing of nifH gene fragments
Systematic and Applied Microbiology, 2016Targeted Illumina sequencing of nitrogenase reductase (nifH) gene fragments and analyses of pair-end reads through a modified QIIME pipeline were used to assess the diversity of the actinomyceteous genus Frankia in three soils. Soils were vegetated with host or non-host plants, and included locations in Illinois (ABA, host), Colorado (CoMt, non-host ...

Molecular ecology of nifH genes and transcripts in the eastern Mediterranean Sea
Environmental Microbiology, 2007Summary The eastern Mediterranean Sea is one of the most extreme oligotrophic oceanic regions on earth in terms of nutrient concentrations and primary productivity. Nitrogen fixation has been suggested to contribute to the high N : P molar ratios of ∼28:1 found in this region. Surprisingly, no molecular biological

A Study of Nucleotide Sequences of nifH Genes of Some Methanotrophic Bacteria
Microbiology, 2002Using a previously developed primer system, nifH gene fragments 450 nucleotides long were amplified, cloned, and sequenced for representatives of nitrogen-fixing methanotrophic bacteria of the genera Methylococcus, Methylocystis, and Methylosinus. Fragments of nifH genes were also detected and sequenced in representatives of the genera Methylomonas and

Evaluation of the diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in soybean rhizosphere by nifH gene analysis
Microbiology, 2012Biological nitrogen fixation plays an important role in the nitrogen balance of agricultural ecosystems and provides an essential part of nitrogen nutrition for plants, even in conditions of intensive fertilization. The main agrobiotechnological method for soybean cultivation (Glycine max (L.) Merril) is an application of microbial preparations based ...

The entire coding region of chlL, an essential chloroplast gene required for chlorophyll biosynthesis in the dark in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, was precisely replaced by either the Klebsiella pneumoniae nifH (encoding the structural component of nitrogenase Fe protein) or the Escherichia coli uidA reporter gene encoding beta-glucuronidase.

Organization of nifH and nifD genes in Nostoc commune UTEX 584
2021Nostoc commune UTEX 584 is a photosynthetic desiccation-tolerant cyanobacterium capable of fixing nitrogen. Biotinylated nifH and nifD gene probes from Azotobacter vinelandii (a gift from Dr. Dennis Dean) hybridized to nifH and nifD sequences isolated from Nostoc commune UTEX 584.

The annually reoccurring blooms that characterize the surface waters of the Baltic Sea are dominated by filamentous, heterocystous cyanobacteria such as Nodularia spumigena. In a previous study, we have demonstrated that N. spumigena strain AV1 differentiates heterocysts in the absence of detectable nitrogen fixation activity, an unusual physiological ...
