Nitroimidazoles, including metronidazole, tinidazole and ornidazole, are low molecular weight antimicrobial compounds with excellent activity against anaerobic microorganisms. These compounds are usually bactericidal at low concentrations and their spectrum of activity encompasses almost all the anaerobic bacteria and some capnophylic organisms.

Nitroimidazoles and imaging hypoxia
European Journal of Nuclear Medicine, 1995Decreased tissue oxygen tension is a component of many diseases. Although hypoxia can be secondary to a low inspired pO2 or a variety of lung disorders, the commonest cause is ischemia due to an oxygen demand greater than the local oxygen supply. In tumors, low tissue pO2 is often observed, most often due to a blood supply inadequate to meet the tumor ...

Nitroimidazole-induced chronic hepatitis
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 2001Drug-induced chronic hepatitis is a rare pathological condition. There is no reported case with chronic hepatitis secondary to nitroimidazole use. We report a patient who developed nitroimidazole-induced chronic hepatitis following acute exacerbation of hepatitis three times after nitroimidazole use.

The mutagenic action of nitroimidazoles II. Effects of 2-nitroimidazoles
Mutation Research/Environmental Mutagenesis and Related Subjects, 1975The 2-nitroimidazoles Ro-71051 (N-benzyl-2-nitro-1-imidazole-acetamide) and Ro-5-9963 (3(2-nitro-1-imidazolyl)-1,2-propanediol) increased the mutation rate of a Klebsiella pneumoniae mutant to streptomycin-resistance including streptomycin-dependence in Luria and Delbruck's fluctuation test in concentrations of 0.05-1 mM and 0.02-0.2 mM respectively ...

X-ray analysis confirmed the configuration of the title N1-alkylated C4-nitroimidazole inhibitor. The plane of the imidazole ring, sitting on an axis of the trityl propeller, bisects the angle between two phenyl rings, while the nitro group extends over the third.
