Non-Domination

2016
How should freedom be characterized as a political ideal? This chapter explores one such view, commonly called “republican” or sometimes “neo-Roman,” which holds that the specific sort of freedom a well-ordered society ought to promote is freedom from domination. Recently, a number of new challenges to this view have been raised.

A continuum limit for non-dominated sorting

2014 Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA), 2014
Non-dominated sorting is an important combinatorial problem in multi-objective optimization, which is ubiquitous in many fields of science and engineering. In this paper, we overview the results of some recent work by the authors on a continuum limit for non-dominated sorting.

A Comparison of Dominant and Non-Dominant Hand Strengths

Journal of Hand Surgery, 1999
This study compares dominant and non-dominant hand strength in both right- and left-handed participants. Maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle, power grip strength and pulp-to-pulp pinch strength were assessed under carefully controlled conditions. No significant differences were observed between dominant and

Beyond non-domination

Philosophy & Social Criticism, 2013
The concept of non-domination is an important contribution to the study of freedom but it does not comprehend the whole of freedom. Insofar as domination requires a conscious capacity for control on the part of the dominant party, it fails to capture important threats to individual freedom that permeate many contemporary liberal democracies today. Much

Non-dominating ultrafilters

Acta Universitatis Carolinae / Mathematica et Physica, 2010
We show that if $\hbox{cov}(M) =\kappa$ , where $\kappa$ is a regularcardinal such that 8$\forall\lambda < \kappa(2^\lambda\leq\kappa)$, then for every unbounded directed family $H$ of size $\kappa$ there is an ultralter $U_H$ such that the relativized Mathias forcing $M(U_H)$ preserves the unboundedness of $H$. This improves a result of M.

On the Structure of the Non-dominated Set for Bicriteria Programmes

Journal of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, 1996
Summary: In multiple-objective programming, a knowledge of the structure of the non-dominated set can aid in generating efficient solutions. We present new concepts which allow for a better understanding of the structure of the set of nondominated solutions for non-convex bicriteria programming problems. In particular, a means of determining whether or

Non-domination and Dignity

2011
This chapter explores how well the ideal of non-domination succeeds in ensuring the dignity and standing of the individual. It is argued that the way non-domination has been explicated by the leading republican scholar Philip Pettit is problematically ambiguous in two important respects (the precise meaning of ‘avowed or readily avowable interests ...

A Novel Non-dominated Sorting Algorithm

2011
Many multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEA) require non-dominated sorting of the population. The process of non-dominated sorting is one of the main time consuming parts of MOEA. The performance of MOEA can be improved by designing efficient non-dominated sorting algorithm. The paper proposes Novel Non-dominated Sorting algorithm (NNS).

Freedom as non-domination

2012
In order to gain a good understanding of the concept of freedom as non-domination it will be useful to focus first on what is required for freedom in one or another choice. As we saw, republicans traditionally concentrated on the freedom of the person, period – the free status of the liber , or ‘free-man’ or citizen – rather than on the freedom of a ...

International strategies of non‐dominant firms

The International Executive, 1986
There has been a growing interest in how follower firms can compete with industry leaders. This article documents the use of international strategies by some non-dominant firms to avoid direct competition with industry leaders. Twenty-five cases of international strategies used by non-dominant firms in a variety of industries were cluster analyzed to ...
