Antimicrobial resistance and mechanisms of epigenetic regulation

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2023
The rampant use of antibiotics in animal husbandry, farming and clinical disease treatment has led to a significant issue with pathogen resistance worldwide over the past decades. The classical mechanisms of resistance typically investigate antimicrobial

Species richness and distribution of primates in disturbed and converted forest landscapes in northern Borneo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Knowledge of fundamental aspects of ecology such as species richness and distribution, and the factors affecting them, is increasingly used to identify priority areas for conservation and to effectively manage threatened species.

Encephalopathy induced by Alzheimer brain inoculation in a non-human primate

open access: yesActa Neuropathologica Communications, 2019
Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by cognitive alterations, cerebral atrophy and neuropathological lesions including neuronal loss, accumulation of misfolded and aggregated β-amyloid peptides (Aβ) and tau proteins.

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.

Beyond aerodigestion: exaptation of feeding-related mouth movements for social communication in human and non-human primates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Three arguments are advanced from human and non-human primate infancy research for the exaptation of ingestive mouth movements (tongue-protrusion and lip-smacking) for the purposes of social communication: Their relation to affiliative behaviours; their ...

Integration of Perovskite/Low‐Dimensional Material Heterostructures for Optoelectronics and Artificial Visual Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heterojunctions combining halide perovskites with low‐dimensional materials enhance optoelectronic devices by enabling precise charge control and improving efficiency, stability, and speed. These synergies advance flexible electronics, wearable sensors, and neuromorphic computing, mimicking biological vision for real‐time image analysis and intelligent

Comparing HD knockin pigs and mice reveals the pathological role of IL-17

open access: yesCell Reports, 2023
Summary: Our previous work has established a knockin (KI) pig model of Huntington’s disease (HD) that can replicate the typical pathological features of HD, including selective striatal neuronal loss, reactive gliosis, and axonal degeneration.

Adenovirus infection is associated with altered gut microbial communities in a non-human primate

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
Adenovirus (AdV) infections are one of the main causes of diarrhea in young children. Enteric AdVs probably disrupt gut microbial defences, which can result in diarrhea.

Metal Nanoclusters for Cancer Imaging and Treatment

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary and discussion of the core–shell design capabilities of metal nanoclusters (NCs) at the atomic level for cancer imaging and treatment. It offers essential insights into the design principles of metal NCs while also encouraging the exploration of other nanomaterials and their potential theranostic ...

Characterization of the fecal microbiome from non-human wild primates reveals species specific microbial communities. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
BACKGROUND: Host-associated microbes comprise an integral part of animal digestive systems and these interactions have a long evolutionary history. It has been hypothesized that the gastrointestinal microbiome of humans and other non-human primates may ...
