Advanced Composites Letters, 1992 A Nicalon TM/SiC fabric (8-harness satin) reinforced alumina matrix (CMC) was loaded in tension to fracture. A coating on the surface of the fibre reduced the strength of the fibre-matrix bond, increased the toughness of the CMC by more than 3 times, and raised the unnotched strength by more than 2 times.
