New twist to nuclear import

open access: yesCommunicative & Integrative Biology, 2013
Ribosomes are the nanomachines that synthesize all cellular proteins from mRNA templates. In eukaryotes, ribosomes, which are composed of ribosomal proteins and rRNA, are mainly assembled in the nucleus.

Two‐Photon Polymerized Microvascular Environments for Multicellular Modeling of the Blood–Brain Tumor Barrier

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Modeling the blood–brain tumor barrier is challenging due to complex interactions between brain microvasculature and glioma cells. We present two‐photon polymerized 3D micro‐porous capillary‐like structures that support endothelial alignment, cytoskeletal organization, and pericyte‐endothelial‐glioma tri‐cultures.

Yeast karyopherin Kap95 is required for cell cycle progression at Start

open access: yesBMC Cell Biology, 2010
Background The control of the subcellular localization of cell cycle regulators has emerged as a crucial mechanism in cell division regulation. The active transport of proteins between the nucleus and the cytoplasm is mediated by the transport receptors ...

Protein Import Into Chloroplasts: An Ever-Evolving Story [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Chloroplasts are but one type of a diverse group of essential organelles that distinguish plant cells and house many critical biochemical pathways, including photosynthesis.

Infrared Colloidal Quantum Dot Edge Emitting Lasers Integrated on Silicon

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, the first monolithic integration of Pb‐chalcogenide CQDs in an edge‐emitting DFB laser cavity onto a Si/SiO2 substrate has been demonstrated. The optimizations of SiO2 layer thickness, engineering of the grating duty cycle, and implementing λ/4 phase shift resulted in the achievement of spectrally pure, single‐mode lasing at 1650 nm with ...

Impaired nuclear import and viral incorporation of Vpr derived from a HIV long-term non-progressor

open access: yesRetrovirology, 2008
We previously reported an epidemiologically linked HIV-1 infected patient cohort in which a long-term non-progressor (LTNP) infected two recipients who then exhibited normal disease progression.

Biohybrid Actuators in Compact Arrangement with Embedded X Electrode

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Selective control of multimuscle biohybrid actuators is crucial for achieving complex movements of biohybrid robots. In this study, embedded X electrodes are fabricated to selectively control multiple muscles, realizing the robotic finger's bidirectional movements.
