The nuclear pore comes to the fore
Trends in Plant Science, 2008The nuclear pore complex is the gateway of macromolecular trafficking between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Although its composition is well characterized in yeast and mammalian systems, little is known about the plant nuclear pore. Several recent reports describe complex whole-organism phenotypes based on mutations in plant nucleoporins. The pathways

Autoantigens of the nuclear pore complex
Journal of Molecular Medicine, 2004The nuclear envelope (NE) is one of many intracellular targets of the autoimmune response in patients with autoimmune liver disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and related conditions. In eukaryotic organisms the NE consists of five interconnected regions: an outer nuclear membrane (ONM) that is continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum, an ...

The Structure of the Nuclear Pore Complex
Annual Review of Biochemistry, 2011In eukaryotic cells, the spatial segregation of replication and transcription in the nucleus and translation in the cytoplasm imposes the requirement of transporting thousands of macromolecules between these two compartments. Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) are the sole gateways that facilitate this macromolecular exchange across the nuclear envelope ...

The nuclear pore and plant development
Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2009All macromolecules that traffic between the nucleus and the cytoplasm traverse the nuclear pore. While yeast and mammalian nuclear pore structure and function have recently been substantially refined, our understanding of the plant nuclear pore is still far from comprehensive.

Nuclear pores in the spermatozoon of the rat
Experientia, 1976The paper describes a hexagonal array of nuclear pores in a non-redundant region of the nuclear envelope underlying the basal surface of the rat spermatozoon head. It is concluded that intranuclear material protruding through these pores is the cause of the characteristic rows of circular 'bumps' found in surface replicas of this region.

Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) are large macromolecular assemblies with an estimated mass of about 125 million Dalton. Depending on the activity of a cell, the number of NPCs varies but is usually around 3000–4000 per nucleus. NPCs are sites of bidirectional transport.

The nuclear envelope forms the boundary between the nucleus and the cytoplasm and as such regulates the exchange of macromolecules between the two compartments. The channels through the nuclear envelop that actually mediate this macromolecular traffic are the nuclear pore complexes.

Nuclear pores: the gate to neurodegeneration
Nature Neuroscience, 2018Compromised compartmentalization of nucleus and cytoplasm has emerged as a central feature of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Nucleocytoplasmic transport is disrupted, with widespread mislocalization of nuclear pore proteins, in TDP-43 proteinopathies such as, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia.

Cancer and the Nuclear Pore Complex
2014The nuclear pore complex (NPC) mediates trafficking between the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm. It also plays key roles in other nuclear processes such as chromatin silencing, transcriptional regulation, and DNA damage repair. Nucleoporins, the structural components of the NPC, have been linked to a multitude of cancers through chromosomal translocations ...
