Atlantic Salmon Alevins Experimentally Exposed to Salmon Gill Poxvirus Become Infected, With the Virus Targeting Epithelial Cells in the Gills, Oral Cavity and Skin

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Infection with salmon gill poxvirus (SGPV) can cause severe gill pathology, leading to respiratory distress and high mortality rates in salmon hatcheries, known as salmon gill poxvirus disease. While the infection has been documented in salmon at sea, broodfish and wild salmon, its occurrence in salmon alevins remains unreported.

Development of a Real‐Time PCR Assay for Noninvasive Detection of Miamiensis avidus in Olive Flounder Aquaculture

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Miamiensis avidus (syn. Philasterides dicentrarchi) leads to high mortality and economic losses in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) aquaculture. In this study, we developed a real‐time PCR assay targeting the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene of M. avidus to sensitively detect and quantify the parasite in seawater.

Imaging malaria parasites across scales and time

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract The idea that disease is caused at the cellular level is so fundamental to us that we might forget the critical role microscopy played in generating and developing this insight. Visually identifying diseased or infected cells lays the foundation for any effort to curb human pathology.

Culicoides species involved in the BTV‐3 epidemic, the Netherlands, 2023–2024

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
A high amount of Culicoides‐midges were captured using Onderstepoort light traps on farms with animals infected with bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV‐3) at the beginning of the outbreak in 2023. Species, sex and parity of the captured Culicoides‐midges were morphologically determined and gravid and parous Culicoides‐midges have been selected and pooled for ...

An Ultra‐Sensitive Quarantine Pathogen On‐Site Detection Based on a One‐Pot Asymmetric Recombinase Polymerase Amplification and MNAzyme‐Assisted Target Recycling Biosensor (OAR‐MNA)

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The dissemination of quarantine pathogens poses a significant risk to global crop production, threatening crop health and disrupting agroecosystems. Timely and accurate on‐site detection is crucial to prevent outbreaks. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and multicomponent DNAzyme (MNAzyme) are promising isothermal detection ...
