Relationship between nutrient concentration, phytoplankton density, and zooplankton density in nutrient enriched experimental ponds

Hydrobiologia, 1974
The effects of different levels of nutrient input on the plankton community was investigated in a two-year controlled fertilization study of eight experimental ponds. There were four treatments, each replicated: a control, to which no fertilizer was added, and three levels of nutrient addition.

A Nutrient Density Standard for Vegetables and Fruits: Nutrients per Calorie and Nutrients per Unit Cost

Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 2005
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommended that consumers give priority to nutrient-dense foods, those that contain substantial amounts of key nutrients in relation to the dietary energy they provide. This study developed a scoring system to estimate the nutritional adequacy of vegetables and fruits, on a per weight, per calorie, and per ...

Nutrient Density and Health: How to Develop Global Nutrient Density Metrics

2015
Nutrient density of foods is a key element of preventive nutrition. Whereas nutrient-dense foods contain more nutrients than calories, energy-dense foods contain more calories than nutrients. Nutrient density of foods is normally calculated in terms of index nutrients per reference amount (100 g, 100 kcal, or per serving).

Defining Nutrient Density: Development and Validation of the Nutrient Rich Foods Index

Journal of the American College of Nutrition, 2009
The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPyramid made a clear distinction between foods that were energy dense and those that were nutrient rich. Consumers were advised to seek out nutrient-rich foods (NRF) in preference to discretionary calories. However, the concept of nutrient density was not formally defined.

Proposed Recommended Nutrient Densities for Moderately Malnourished Children

Food and Nutrition Bulletin, 2009
Recommended Nutrient Intakes (RNIs) are set for healthy individuals living in clean environments. There are no generally accepted RNIs for those with moderate malnutrition, wasting, and stunting, who live in poor environments. Two sets of recommendations are made for the dietary intake of 30 essential nutrients in children with moderate malnutrition ...

Nutrient optimization for high density biological production applications

Cytotechnology, 1991
At the 1989 annual meeting of the U.S. Tissue Culture Associations, Ricahrd am, a leading investigator in the serum-free nutrient requirements of cultured cells, commented on the process of medium development. He noted that a survey of major media manufacturers revealed that, among the top selling mammalian cell culture media formulations, most were ...

Nutrient density of diets in the USDA Nationwide Food Consumption Survey, 1977-1978: II. Adequacy of nutrient density consumption practices

Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1983
Educating the public to plan and consume diets using reasonable and adequate nutrient density standards designed for all ages would enable al most everyone to obtain an adequate supply of nutrients while consuming energy according to individual needs.

Sarcopenia, malnutrition and nutrient density in older people

Post Reproductive Health, 2014
Both sarcopenia and malnutrition can have a significant impact on health and functional status in older people. Good nutrition and physical activity throughout life are protective factors. In addition to inadequate nutrient intake, reduced physical activity is known to increase the risk of developing sarcopenia.

Food selection in anorectics and bulimics: food items, nutrient content and nutrient density.

Journal of the American College of Nutrition, 1995
The food selection and nutrient intake were investigated in women with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and controls.Dietary data was obtained by 24-hour recall, and 7-day recording among eating disordered patients, and by 3-day registration among controls. The intake of energy and nutrients differed from controls, as expected, while there were no ...
