New Nutrient Rich Food Nutrient Density Models That Include Nutrients and MyPlate Food Groups

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2020
Background: Dietary guidelines have shifted emphasis from single nutrients to food patterns, food groups, and dietary ingredients. Nutrient profiling models need to do the same. Methods: Dietary intake data for 23,643 persons aged >2 years came from ...

Mechanisms of parasite‐mediated disruption of brain vessels

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Parasites can affect the blood vessels of the brain, often causing serious neurological problems. This review explains how different parasites interact with and disrupt these vessels, what this means for brain health, and why these processes matter. Understanding these mechanisms may help us develop better ways to prevent or treat brain infections in ...

Methodology for the Determination of Fruit, Vegetable, Nut and Legume Points for Food Supplies without Quantitative Ingredient Declarations and Its Application to a Large Canadian Packaged Food and Beverage Database

open access: yesFoods, 2020
Nutrient profiling (NP) models are useful tools for objectively and transparently quantifying the nutritional quality of packaged foods and beverages. Many NP models incorporate ingredients beneficial for health (e.g., fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes ...

Bog bilberry phenolics, antioxidant capacity and nutrient profile

open access: yesFood Chemistry, 2016
Phenolics and nutrient profiles of bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum L.) collected from high mountain pastures in northeast Anatolia (Turkey) were examined for the first time in this study. The major soluble sugar identified in the berry was fructose, following by glucose, and the main organic acid identified was citric acid, followed by malic acid ...

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Responses to the updated Nutri-Score algorithms in Norway: A qualitative study among food system actors in the NewTools-project

open access: yesFood & Nutrition Research
Background: Nutri-Score is a front-of-pack label grading foods and beverages from A to E indicating nutritional quality based on the foods’ favorable and unfavorable components, and a contender in the ongoing debate on the possible implementation of a ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

The Newly Developed Elderly Nutrient-Rich Food Score Is a Useful Tool to Assess Nutrient Density in European Older Adults

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2019
Objective: To develop a nutrient-rich food (NRF) score that captures dietary reference values for older adults and to validate this against a diet index that was specifically designed to assess adherence to dietary guidelines for the older population ...

Renal formulas pretreated with medications alters the nutrient profile [PDF]

open access: yesPediatric Nephrology, 2015
Pretreating renal formulas with medications to lower the potassium and phosphorus content is common in clinical practice; however, the effect of this treatment on other nutrients is relatively unstudied. We examine whether nutrient composition is affected by pretreating renal formulas with sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) suspension and sevelamer ...
