Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Assessing crop production and rotation economically, environmentally and nutritionally in the Republic of Ireland

open access: yesIrish Journal of Agricultural and Food Research
The importance of finding alternative protein sources to partially replace dietary meat intake has been emphasised. A comparison of different plant-based protein sources, namely cereals (wheat, barley, oats), brassicas (oilseed rape) and legumes (peas ...

Secular trends and factors associated with overweight among Brazilian preschool children: PNSN-1989, PNDS-1996, and 2006/07

open access: yesJornal de Pediatria (Versão em Português), 2014
Objective: to describe the secular trends in overweight among preschool children in the years 1989, 1996, and 2006, and to identify risk factors associated with this condition in 2006. Methods: anthropometric data from three surveys (1989, 1996, and 2006)

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Change in quality of malnutrition surveys between 1986 and 2015

open access: yesEmerging Themes in Epidemiology, 2018
Background Representative surveys collecting weight, height and MUAC are used to estimate the prevalence of acute malnutrition. The results are then used to assess the scale of malnutrition in a population and type of nutritional intervention required ...

Medical Examination in Nutrition Surveys [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Nutrition, 2005
Pellagra was the most important deficiency disease used as a model for nutrition surveys, because its diagnosis depended on physical signs. By the mid twentieth century, laboratory tests improved the specificity of physical signs in diagnosis of deficiency disease. The author uses his experience in Panama to illustrate how attention to the details of a
