Miliary Tuberculosis Diagnosed After Repeated Sputum Smear Examinations Despite Negative Results at a Referral Tuberculosis Center: The Importance of Maintaining Clinical Suspicion

open access: yesJournal of General and Family Medicine, Volume 27, Issue 5, September 2026.
ABSTRACT An 88‐year‐old woman with back pain was found to have destructive changes at T9/T10 and diffuse micronodular pulmonary opacities suggestive of miliary tuberculosis. At two referring hospitals, six sputum smears and two interferon‐gamma release assays were negative.

DAMPs, PAMPs, and Alarmins: From Mechanism to Therapy

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2026.
This review synthesizes the expanding biology of PAMPs and DAMPs, from their molecular sources and sensing mechanisms to regulatory networks that govern inflammation and homeostasis. Spanning from classical immune activation to trained immunity and interorgan communication, we highlight the interplay between PAMPs and DAMPs and their context‐dependent ...

Ergothioneine: Biosynthesis, Molecular Mechanisms, Physiological Function, and Role in Disease

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 7, Issue 9, September 2026.
Ergothioneine is a natural thione antioxidant with significant biomedical potential. By reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cellular injury, ergothioneine may support interventions for aging‐related disorders, neurodegeneration, metabolic diseases, and skin protection.

Diagnosis of Ocular Tuberculosis

open access: yesOcular Immunology and Inflammation, 2016
Ocular tuberculosis remains a presumptive clinical diagnosis, as the gold standard tests for diagnosing ocular tuberculosis are often not useful: Mycobacterium tuberculosis cultures require weeks to process on Lowenstein-Jenson media and have low yield from ocular samples; while acid-fast bacilli smears or polymerase chain reaction detection of M ...

Ocular Tuberculosis

Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, 1993
In recent years tuberculosis has reemerged as a serious public health problem, raising the possibility that tuberculous eye disease may also become more prevalent. The predominant route by which tubercle bacilli reach the eye is through the bloodstream, after infecting the lungs.
