Ellagitannin-Lipid Interaction by HR-MAS NMR Spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Ellagitannins have antimicrobial activity, which might be related to their interactions with membrane lipids. We studied the interactions of 12 different ellagitannins and pentagalloylglucose with a lipid extract of Escherichia coli by high-resolution ...

High intraspecific variability and previous experience affect polyphenol metabolism in polyphagous Lymantria mathura caterpillars

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 2, February 2024.
We studied polyphenol metabolism in polyphagous caterpillars of Lymantria mathura (Erebidae, Lepidoptera) to explore mechanisms that may contribute to its ability to feed on various host‐plants. We detected pronounced intraspecific variation in polyphenol metabolism, an ability to excrete ingested metabolites and potential dietary habituation.

Oxidatively Active Plant Phenolics Detected by UHPLC-DAD-MS after Enzymatic and Alkaline Oxidation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
We developed a combination of methods to estimate the alkaline oxidative conditions of the midgut of insect larvae and to reveal the alkaline and enzymatic oxidative activities for individual phenolic compounds present in the larval host plants.

Tannins as Antiviral Agents [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Tannins possess a variety of biological effects, not a small part of which is of medical significance. Tannins, isolated from plants as well as synthetically obtained, manifest activity against a large spectrum of viruses: enteroviruses (polio- and ...

Phagocyte Immunomodulatory Activity of Oenothein B, A Macrocyclic Elligatannin Isolated from Epilobium angustifolium

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2010
Epilobium angustifolium has been traditionally used to treat of a number of diseases; however, not much is known regarding its effect on innate immune cells. We found that extracts of E.

Identification of a Hydrolyzable Tannin, Oenothein B, as an Aluminum-Detoxifying Ligand in a Highly Aluminum-Resistant Tree, Eucalyptus camaldulensis [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Physiology, 2013
Eucalyptus camaldulensis is a tree species in the Myrtaceae that exhibits extremely high resistance to aluminum (Al). To explore a novel mechanism of Al resistance in plants, we examined the Al-binding ligands in roots and their role in Al resistance of E. camaldulensis.

First evidence of hexameric and heptameric ellagitannins in plants detected by liquid chromatography/electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Ellagitannins are bioactive plant polyphenols of which more than 500 individual compounds have been identified from plants. An ellagitannin-rich fraction was isolated by Sephadex LH-20 from Oenothera biennis (common evening primrose) leaves and roots and

Oligomeric Ellagitannins of Epilobium Angustifolium : Quantification and Bioactivity Assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Over the past few years there has been a growing body of evidence highlighting the fact that tannin-rich fodders could be beneficial to animal welfare as well as to the environment, by decreasing methane emissions from ruminants.

The Potential of Higher Plants as a Source of New Drugs [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The plant kingdom is still an untapped reservoir of new molecules with therapeutic potential. A selection of bioactive plant constituents recently discovered are presented with focus on new drugs or lead compounds in an advanced state of development ...
