The electronic structure and spectra of a family of nickel porphyrin complexes are analyzed using approximate density functional theory (DFT). The three complexes, Ni(OEP), Ni(OEP-C4SiMe3), and Ni(OEP)(μ-C4)Ni(OEP) represent a logical increase in complexity starting from a simple metalloporphyrin.

The reaction of nitrite with ferric and ferrous porphyrins was examined using visible, infrared and NMR spectroscopy. Solutions of either ferric or ferrous porphyrin were stable in the presence of nitrite, with only complexation reactions being observed.
