Intrinsically Bursting Olfactory Receptor Neurons

Journal of Neurophysiology, 2007
Rhythmically bursting neurons are fundamental to neuronal network function but typically are not considered in the context of primary sensory signaling. We now report intrinsically bursting lobster primary olfactory receptor neurons that respond to odors with a phase-dependent burst of action potentials.

Olfactory receptor neurons express D2 dopamine receptors

The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1999
The role of the dopamine (DA) in the olfactory bulb (OB) was explored by determining which of the potential target cells express dopamine receptors (DARs). Previously, it was reported that D2-like DAR (D2, D3, and D4 subtypes) radioligand binding is restricted to the outer layers of the OB.

Amphibian olfactory receptor neurons express olfactory marker protein

Brain Research, 1992
Expression of olfactory marker protein (OMP) in olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) in two amphibians was investigated by immunohistochemical methods. The OMP immunoreactivity was observed in the cilia, apical dendritic knobs, dendrites and somas of ORNs; the axons of ORNs also showed intense immunoreactivity for OMP throughout their course from the ...

Impulse conduction of olfactory receptor neuron axons

Microscopy Research and Technique, 2002
AbstractCompound action potentials were recorded from rat olfactory receptor neuron axons at measured distances from the stimulation electrode along the lateral surface of the main olfactory bulb. Distances were plotted as a function of the latencies measured from stimulus onset to the prominent negative trough of the triphasic compound action ...

Inward rectification in rat olfactory receptor neurons

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 1991
Inwardly rectifying currents in enzymically dissociated olfactory receptor neurons of rat were studied by using patch-clamp techniques. Upon hyperpolarization to membrane potentials more negative than -100 mV, small inward-current relaxations were observed.

Calcium-signaling networks in olfactory receptor neurons

Neuroscience, 2008
The olfactory neuroepithelium represents a unique interface between the brain and the external environment. Olfactory function comprises a distinct set of molecular tasks: sensory signal transduction, cytoprotection and adult neurogenesis. A multitude of biochemical studies has revealed the central role of Ca(2+) signaling in the function of olfactory ...

Mature olfactory receptor neurons express connexin 43

The Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2000
The expression of the gap junction subunit connexin 43 was studied in the olfactory epithelium of adult mice. In agreement with conclusions from previous immunohistochemical studies, we observed expression of mRNA encoding for connexin 43 in layers of the epithelium containing nuclei belonging to sustentacular cells.

Preparation of isolated mouse olfactory receptor neurons

Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology, 1987
A method is described for producing large numbers of isolated olfactory receptor neurons from adult mouse nasal epithelium. The dissociated neurons and other cell types isolated from nasal epithelium retain their morphology and can be identified visually.

Ultrastructural changes in olfactory receptor neurons following olfactory nerve section

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1981
AbstractUnilateral olfactory nerve section was performed in the salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum. An ultrastructural study was performed to investigate the changes occuring during degeneration and replacement of the mature olfactory receptor neurons. Experimental and contralateral control tissues were examined following postoperative survival periods ...

Functional properties of vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons

Physiological Reviews, 1986
The interaction of an odorant with the chemosensitive membrane of olfactory receptor neurons initiates a sequence of molecular and membrane events leading to sensory transduction, impulse initiation, and the transmission of sensory information to the brain. The main steps in this sequence are summarized in Figure 6.
