Nitrogen excretion and oxygen consumption under severe hypoxia in siluriform fishes from the Amazon

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Siluriform fishes collected from the Rio Negro and Rio Solimões proved to be highly resistant to aquatic hypoxia. In all four species analysed in this study, aquatic oxygen consumption significantly decreased from normoxic levels at water PO2 values near 1 kPa. Air‐breathing activity was observed only in Sturisoma sp. (Rio Negro).

Microorganisms of the intestinal microbiota of Oncorhynchus mykiss produce antagonistic substances against bacteria contaminating food and causing disease in humans

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety, 2017
The objective was to analyse the antibacterial ability of members of the intestinal microbiota of Oncorhynchus mykiss specimens on several bacterial target strains that contaminate food and cause disease in humans.

The physiological response of juvenile diploid and triploid Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus to exhaustive exercise

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Triploidy is an effective tool for producing sterile fishes but often results in impaired performance in commercial aquaculture. In light of this, our study compared the physiological response to exhaustive exercise in juvenile diploid and triploid Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus, a polar species with great potential for aquaculture.

Expression of corticoid‐regulatory genes in the gills of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr and smolt and during salinity acclimation

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract In teleost fishes, cortisol is the major corticoid and has both glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid actions. However, how fish tissues discriminate between these distinct corticosteroid actions is unclear. In mammals, the major factors responsible for intracellular corticosteroid regulation are glucocorticoid receptors (grs) and the ...

COMPOSICION DE LA DIETA DE ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS (WALBAUM 1792) (PISCES: SALMONIDAE) EN UN SISTEMA FLUVIAL DE BAJA INTERVENCION ANTROPICA: ESTERO NONGUEN, VIII REGION, CHILE COMPOSITION OF THE DIET OF ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS (WALBAUM 1792) (PISCES: SALMONIDAE) IN A RIVER SYSTEM OF LOW ANTROPOGENIC ACTION: NONGUEN STREAM, VIII REGION, CHILE

open access: yesGayana, 2002
Se estudió la dieta alimentaria de Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum 1792) en un ecosistema fluvial con baja intervención antrópica determinando si hay correspon-dencia entre los ítemes consumidos por el pez y la oferta alimentaria.

Ontogenetic niche partitioning in a facultatively anadromous salmonid: Implications for population dynamics

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Species management and conservation efforts are often based on range-wide trends, assuming dynamic equilibrium across space and time, even though fine-scale variability may be driving local dynamics.

Northern cod (Gadus morhua) movement: insights from acoustic telemetry and genomics

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Knowledge of the timing and diversity of fish movements within a commercially exploited stock complex is required to ensure the sustainability of fisheries. Although migration can be driven by environmental factors, genomic mechanisms also play an important role in this complex life‐history trait. The northern cod (Gadus morhua) stock complex,
