Simultaneous cloning of open reading frames into several different expression vectors
Genomic sequencing has enabled the prediction of thousands of genes, most of which either cannot be assigned a function or can be only broadly categorized on the basis of sequence alone.

Determinants of genome-wide distribution and evolution of uORFs in eukaryotes
Upstream open reading frames (uORFs) have widespread regulatory functions in eukaryotes, their genomic distribution and evolution is understudied. Here, the authors characterise ~17 million putative uORFs across 478 eukaryotic species, showing how ...

An unexpected gene cluster for downstream degradation of alkylphenols in Sphingomonas sp. strain TTNP3 [PDF]
In silico analysis of nucleotide sequences flanking the recently found hydroquinone dioxygenase in Sphingomonas sp. strain TTNP3 revealed a gene cluster that encodes a hydroquinone catabolic pathway.

eIF1 modulates the recognition of suboptimal translation initiation sites and steers gene expression via uORFs [PDF]
Alternative translation initiation mechanisms such as leaky scanning and reinitiation potentiate the polycistronic nature of human transcripts. By allowing for reprogrammed translation, these mechanisms can mediate biological responses to stimuli.

This study explores salivary RNA for breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, prognosis, and follow‐up. High‐throughput RNA sequencing identified distinct salivary RNA signatures, including novel transcripts, that differentiate BC from healthy controls, characterize histological and molecular subtypes, and indicate lymph node involvement.

MetAMOS: A modular and open source metagenomic assembly and analysis pipeline [PDF]
© 2013 Treangen et al. We describe MetAMOS, an open source and modular metagenomic assembly and analysis pipeline. MetAMOS represents an important step towards fully automated metagenomic analysis, starting with next-generation sequencing reads and ...

Small open reading frames: Not so small anymore [PDF]
Today, nearly 10 years after the publication of the complete sequence of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome, the total number of genes in this organism is largely considered resolved and currently stands at 5782 (http://www.yeastgenome.org/cache/ genomeSnapshot.html).

This study integrates transcriptomic profiling of matched tumor and healthy tissues from 32 colorectal cancer patients with functional validation in patient‐derived organoids, revealing dysregulated metabolic programs driven by overexpressed xCT (SLC7A11) and SLC3A2, identifying an oncogenic cystine/glutamate transporter signature linked to ...

Genome sequence of canine herpesvirus [PDF]
Canine herpesvirus is a widespread alphaherpesvirus that causes a fatal haemorrhagic disease of neonatal puppies. We have used high-throughput methods to determine the genome sequences of three viral strains (0194, V777 and V1154) isolated in the United ...
