Optical properties of liquid crystals [PDF]

open access: yesBiuletyn Wojskowej Akademii Technicznej
The paper presents the basic optical properties of liquid crystals. It focuses in particular on nematic and cholesteric liquidcrystals, which exhibit particularly interesting and practical optical properties.

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...

Investigations on Cmc2_1-Si_2P_2X structures and physical properties by first-principles calculations

open access: yesCondensed Matter Physics, 2021
The new structures, Cmc2_1 – Si_2P_2X (X=S, Se, Te, and Po), are predicted, and their mechanical, electronic and optical properties are investigated with the density functional theory, by first principles calculations. The elastic constants of the four

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
