Nanostructured 316L Stainless Steel Stent Surfaces Improve Corrosion Resistance, and Enhance Endothelization and Hemocompatibility

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study investigates the impact of nanostructured surface modification on corrosion resistance, HUVEC functions, and platelet interactions of 316L SS for cardiovascular stents. Nanostructured surfaces enhanced HUVEC proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis‐related gene expression while reducing platelet adhesion and hemolysis.

Clinical insights on Tolosa Hunt syndrome: a multidisciplinary approach on neurological-related symptomatology in maxillofacial region [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background Tolosa–Hunt syndrome (THS) related neurological symptoms are described in literature as “unilateral”, “recurrent”, “episodic”, “intense”, “severe”, “lancinating” or “stabbing” pain on the upper face and forehead and may be misdiagnosed ...

Electrophotographic Powder Application for Surface Functionalization of Polymer Parts with Thin Silver‐Nanoadditivated Bactericidal Layers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Polyamide 12 powder nanoadditivated with laser‐synthesized silver nanoparticles is deposited and sintered on polymer parts via EPA‐PBF‐LB/P. The thin surface coating (140 µm) inhibits E. coli and S. aureus bacteria growth and significantly increases the UV light absorption, whereas the mechanical and thermal properties remain unchanged due to minimal ...

Daylight-driven rechargeable antibacterial and antiviral nanofibrous membranes for bioprotective applications. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are a significant burden on global economies and public health. Most present personal protective equipment used to prevent EID transmission and infections is typically devoid of antimicrobial activity.

Evaporation‐Enhanced Redox Cycling for Rapid Detection of Attomolar SARS‐CoV‐2 Virions Using Nanolithography‐Free Electrochemical Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study presents microfabricated electrochemical sensors for detecting ultralow viral particles counts through evaporation‐enhanced redox cycling (E2RC). To achieve sub‐micrometer gap in interdigitated microelectrodes, a scalable, nanolithography‐free fabrication method is developed.

Functionalized nanopore-embedded electrodes for rapid DNA sequencing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The determination of a patient's DNA sequence can, in principle, reveal an increased risk to fall ill with particular diseases [1,2] and help to design "personalized medicine" [3].

Dynamics of deformable straight and curved prolate capsules in simple shear flow [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
This work investigates the motion of neutrally-buoyant, slightly deformable straight and curved prolate capsules in unbounded simple shear flow at zero Reynolds number using direct simulations. The curved capsules serve as a model for the typical crescent-shaped sickle red blood cells in sickle cell disease (SCD).

Chemical AI in the Limelight: The Contribution of Photochromic Materials and Oscillatory Chemical Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Photochromic compounds are versatile ingredients for the development of Chemical AI. When they are embedded in a tight microenvironment, they become Markov blankets. They are also valuable for processing Boolean and Fuzzy logic. They contribute to neuromorphic engineering in wetware based on opto‐chemical signals exchanged with oscillatory chemical ...

Development of Photo‐Biocatalytic Redox System for Asymmetric Synthesis of Optically Active Amines Using Blue Light and Transaminases. A Case Study Toward Mavacamten

open access: yesAdvanced Synthesis &Catalysis, EarlyView.
Abstract α‐Chiral amines are versatile building blocks for the asymmetric synthesis of optically pure high‐added‐value chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and natural products. Herein, we report a one‐pot, two‐step sequential deracemization of racemic sec‐alcohols to optically enriched primary amines throught a photo‐biocatalytic ...
