Suppression of lung adenocarcinoma migration through organelle alkalization by human lactoferrin – albumin fusion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This paper reveals how human lactoferrin–albumin fusion (hLF‐HSA) potently suppresses lung adenocarcinoma cell migration. hLF‐HSA upregulates NHE7, leading to Golgi alkalization, disruption of the Golgi secretome, downregulation of MMP1, and reversal of EMT. These findings suggest a novel Golgi‐targeting strategy to suppress cancer cell migration.

Effect of genetic variation in the organic cation transporter 1 (OCT1) on metformin action [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Investigation, 2007
Metformin is among the most widely prescribed drugs for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Organic cation transporter 1 (OCT1) plays a role in the hepatic uptake of metformin, but its role in the therapeutic effects of the drug, which involve activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), is unknown.

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Increased peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ activity reduces imatinib uptake and efficacy in chronic myeloid leukemia mononuclear cells

open access: yesHaematologica, 2017
Imatinib is actively transported by organic cation transporter-1 (OCT-1) influx transporter, and low OCT-1 activity in diagnostic chronic myeloid leukemia blood mononuclear cells is significantly associated with poor molecular response to imatinib ...

Interaction of Remdesivir with Clinically Relevant Hepatic Drug Uptake Transporters

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2021
Remdesivir has been approved for treatment of COVID-19 and shortens the time to recovery in hospitalized patients. Drug transporters removing remdesivir from the circulation may reduce efficacy of treatment by lowering its plasma levels.

Ontogeny of Hepatic Organic Cation Transporter-1 in Rat and Human

open access: yesDrug Metabolism and Disposition
The organic cation transporter (OCT)-1 mediates hepatic uptake of cationic endogenous compounds and xenobiotics. To date, limited information exists on how Oct1/OCT1 functionally develops with age in rat and human livers and how this would affect the pharmacokinetics of OCT substrates in children or juvenile animals.

Interaction of Chitosan Derivatives with Organic Cation Transporter 1 and 2

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2018
The present study was to investigate the interactions of chitosan derivatives including quaternized chitosan (QC), N‐benzyl‐N,O‐succinyl chitosan (BSCS), N‐naphthyl‐N,O‐succinyl chitosan (NSCS) and N‐octyl‐N,O‐succinyl chitosan (OSCS), with organic cation transporter 1 (OCT1) and OCT2.

Deficiency in the Organic Cation Transporters 1 and 2 (Oct1/Oct2 [Slc22a1/Slc22a2]) in Mice Abolishes Renal Secretion of Organic Cations [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular and Cellular Biology, 2003
The polyspecific organic cation transporters 1 and 2 (Oct1 and -2) transport a broad range of substrates, including drugs, toxins, and endogenous compounds. Their strategic localization in the basolateral membrane of epithelial cells in the liver, intestine (Oct1), and kidney (Oct1 and Oct2) suggests that they play an essential role in removing noxious

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.
