U porodici Orthomyxoviridae (ortho grč. ravan i myxa grč. sluz) su rodovi: Influenzavirus A, B i Influenzavirus C. Za humanu patologiju su važni virusi influence tip A, B i C. Godine 1933. u Velikoj Britaniji prvi je put izoliran virus influence tip A. Godine 1940. Francis je izolirao virus influence tip B (B/Lee/40), a 1950. g. Taylor tip C.
