Phase responses of oscillating components in a signaling pathway

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2013
Signal transduction pathways control various events in mammalian cells such as growth, proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, or migration in response to environmental stimuli.Because of their importance, the activity of signaling pathways is ...

Crosslinkage of B lymphocyte surface immunoglobulin by anti-Ig or antigen induces prolonged oscillation of intracellular ionized calcium

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Medicine, 1987
Our results indicate that B lymphocytes stimulated with anti-Ig or antigen exhibit repetitive [Ca2+]i transients which persist for hours. The magnitude of these transients favors an important and ongoing role for [Ca2+]i elevation in antigen driven B ...

The Immobilization of Hyaluronic Acid in 3D Hydrogel Scaffolds Modulates Macrophage Polarization

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
This study explores the use of collagen‐hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels for the 3D culture of macrophages, providing a useful tool for modelling macrophage behavior in tissues and diseases. It highlights how hydrogel composition, mechanical properties, and preparation methods influence macrophage behavior, revealing for the first time that HA's ...

Amplification of Ca2+ Signaling by Diacylglycerol-mediated Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate Production*

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2005
Stimulation of various cell surface receptors leads to the production of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG) through phospholipase C (PLC) activation, and the IP3 and DAG in turn trigger Ca2+ release through IP3 receptors and ...

Osteocytes under Mechanical Loading Regulate PC‐3 Cancer Cell–Mineral Interactions during Early‐Stage Metastasis to Bone

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
In this study, Seaman et al. develop a co‐culture assay to examine interactions between prostate cancer cells and mineralized osteoblasts in a microfluidic platform. The authors collect conditioned media from static or flow‐stimulated osteocytes and demonstrate that mechanical loading of osteocytes regulates the growth of prostate cancer cells and ...

Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Performance of Plasma‐Assisted Hybrid Friction Stir Welded Dissimilar Aluminum–Copper Joints

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Plasma‐assisted hybrid friction stir welding of dissimilar AlCu joints employs localized plasma preheating to balance heat input and enhance plastic flow. The optimized process reduces axial force by up to 35%, refines the microstructure, and achieves ≈96% joint efficiency.

EVOLUTION OF THE CIRCADIAN CLOCK IN EXTREME ENVIRONMENT: LESSONS FROM CAVEFISH. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Evolution has been strongly influenced by the daily cycles of temperature and light imposed by the rotation of the Earth. Fascinating demonstrations of this are seen in extreme environments such as caves where some animals have remained completely ...

Ultrahigh Piezoelectricity in Truss‐Based Ferroelectric Ceramics Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
By leveraging the unique combination of polarization direction and loading state, ultrahigh piezoelectricity is achieved through careful tuning of the relative density and scaling ratio in truss‐based ferroelectric metamaterials. This approach enables the simultaneous realization of extremely high piezoelectric constants and ultralow dielectric ...
