Systems Engineering to Systems Biology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
No abstract provided. First paragraph: The ‘bottom-up’ approach to systems biology entails quantitatively studying complex biological processes by analyzing their molecular components.

Gout and NLRP3 inflammasome biology

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Accepted Article.
This review describes the three broad stages of acute inflammation in the context of gout: initiation, leucocyte mobilisation, and self‐resolution. A typical case of a gout flare is presented. The role of the NLRP3 inflammasome in acute monosodium urate crystal‐induced inflammation is reviewed in detail.

Relationship between plasma osmolality and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Aim: Heart failure (HF), a progressive disease, is accompanied by chronic inflammation and changes in osmolality. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) demonstrates a sys- temic inflammatory response in most diseases; however, the relationship between

Development of an HEK293 Suspension Cell Culture Medium, Transient Transfection Optimization Workflow, and Analytics for Batch rAAV Manufacturing

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Recombinant adeno associated virus (rAAV) vectors have become popular delivery vehicles for in vivo gene therapies, but demand for rAAVs continues to outpace supply. Platform processes for rAAV production are being developed by many manufacturers, and transient chemical transfection of human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells is currently the

Control Theoretic Approach to Predict Shock Response in Yeast [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
This report formulates a minimal model based on a control theoretic framework to best describe the dynamics of perfect adaptation shown by the hyper osmotic shock response system in yeast. Using principles from adaptive control and stability theory, we step by step apply system identification methods to build a simple second order linear system with ...

Optical tweezer for probing erythrocyte membrane deformability

open access: yes, 2009
We report that the average rotation speed of optically trapped crenated erythrocytes is direct signature of their membrane deformability. When placed in hypertonic buffer, discocytic erythrocytes are subjected to crenation.

High‐sensitivity real‐time monitoring of pH and respiration activity unveils metabolic dynamics in shake flask cultures

open access: yesBiotechnology Progress, Volume 41, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
Abstract Erlenmeyer shake flasks are widely used during the first steps of bioprocess development. Despite their broad application in academia and industry, shake flasks usually lack standardized and user‐friendly online monitoring techniques. In this work, the pH and Respiratory Activity MOnitoring System (pH‐RAMOS) for the non‐invasive online ...

Measuring the viscous and elastic properties of single cells using video particle tracking microrheology [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2011
We present a simple and \emph{non-invasive} experimental procedure to measure the linear viscoelastic properties of cells by passive video particle tracking microrheology. In order to do this, a generalised Langevin equation is adopted to relate the time-dependent thermal fluctuations of a bead, chemically bound to the cell's \emph{exterior}, to the ...
