Probability overestimation induced by icon arrays

open access: yesActa Psychologica
In decision making under risk, where the consequences of choices vary depending on specific probabilities, a proper interpretation of the presented probabilities is essential.

Additive Manufacturing of Continuous Fibre Reinforced Composites: Process, Characterisation, Modelling, and Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing provides precise control over the placement of continuous fibres within polymer matrices, enabling customised mechanical performance in composite components. This article explores processing strategies, mechanical testing, and modelling approaches for additive manufactured continuous fibre‐reinforced composites.

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.

Nursing home residents make a difference – The overestimation of saving rates at older ages [PDF]

open access: yes
While life-cycle theory makes the clear prediction that people dissave at old-age, this prediction is not at all borne out by the data from many countries. Various suggestions have been made to explain this discrepancy. This paper sheds more light on the

The effect that rounding to prototypical values has on expected duration estimation accuracy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The scheduling component of the time management process was used as a ‘paradigm’ to investigate the estimation of duration of future tasks. Two experiments looked at the effect that the tendency to provide estimates in the form of rounded close ...

From discrete to continuous description of spherical surface charge distributions

open access: yes, 2017
The importance of electrostatic interactions in soft matter and biological systems can often be traced to non-uniform charge effects, which are commonly described using a multipole expansion of the corresponding charge distribution. The standard approach

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Higher Order Corrections to the Primordial Gravitational Wave Spectrum and its Impact on Parameter Estimates for Inflation

open access: yes, 2011
We study the impact of the use of the power series expression for the primordial tensor spectrum on parameter estimation from future direct detection gravitational wave experiments.

Exploring Dipolar Dynamics and Ionic Transport in Metal‐Organic Frameworks: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the interplay of dipolar dynamics and ionic charge transport in MOF compounds is investigated. Synthesizing the novel structure CFA‐25 with integrated freely rotating dipolar groups, local and macroscopic effects, including interactions with Cs cations are explored.

Addressing Function Approximation Error in Actor-Critic Methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In value-based reinforcement learning methods such as deep Q-learning, function approximation errors are known to lead to overestimated value estimates and suboptimal policies.
