Zipper grids for force and moment computation on overset grids

12th Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference, 1995
A scheme is developed to account for the overlapped zones on overset structured surface grids when computing forces and moments for the surface. Grid points in the overlapped zone between grids are blanked. The resulting gaps are then filled by 'zipper grids' which are strings of triangular cells that conform to the original surface. A hybrid composite

On adaptive refinement and overset structured grids

13th Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference, 1997
The need for adaptive refinement for unsteady aerodynamic applications that may involve relative motion between configuration component parts is recognized. Computational advantages of structured data are reviewed. Properties of uniform Cartesian (structured) grids that lead to substantial computational advantages are identified.

Multigrid approach to overset grid communication

AIAA Journal, 1995
Summary: The nonaligned multigrid method is introduced as an alternative to boundary point interpolation for communication in overset grid systems. The nonaligned multigrid method treats the individual grids as levels in a multigrid solution procedure. This technique was able to converge 69\% faster than standard boundary point interpolation for Mach 2

Improved interpolation for viscous overset grids

35th Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 1997
A method for improving the interpolation utilized in overlapping grid systems is presented. The method modifies the mapping from computational space to physical space to provide a mapping where the boundary faces of the grid lie on the corresponding geometry surface.

Challenges and applications of overset grid coupling strategies

PAMM, 2017
AbstractThe paper deals with the mass conservation and geometry intersection of overset grid coupling strategies. The interpolation based grid coupling of the overset procedure violates the inherent mass conservation of finite‐volume methods. This is problematic since incompressible finite‐volume solvers directly use the mass defect when solving for ...

On the overset grids in computational Marine Hydrodynamics

2022
An overview of using overset grids in computational marine hydrodynamics is presented. The main advantage of this method is the ability to capture large rigid body displacements that a ship withstands during voyage. Two different cases are presented in which overset grids are appropriate, using open source CFD toolkit OpenFOAM® [1].

Tracking flow features using overset grids

31st Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 1993
A method is proposed to use overset grid topology to track dynamic flow features. Features of interest such as moving shock waves and vortices are overset with relatively fine tracker grids. Solutions are computed on the various grids and information is exchanged at intergrid boundaries.
