Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

Shot-Peening of Pre-Oxidized Plates of Zirconium: Influence of Residual Stress on Oxidation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The present study deals with oxidation behavior under residual stress of shot-peened plates of "commercially pure" zirconium exposed for 30 min at 650 C. The influence of the shot-peening on a pre-oxidized material is presented. The results have been used to determine the influences of these chemical (preoxidation) and mechanical (shot-peening ...

Unraveling Mycobacterium tuberculosis acid resistance and pH homeostasis mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis exhibits a remarkable resilience to acid stress. In this Review, we discuss some of the molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways used by the tubercle bacilli to adapt and resist host‐mediated acid stress. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a successful pathogen that has developed a variety of strategies to survive and ...

Synthesis of a molecularly defined single-active site heterogeneous catalyst for selective oxidation of N-heterocycles

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Synthesis of molecularly defined single-active site catalytic materials is the key to bridging the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.

Real-time observation of oxidation and photo-oxidation of rubrene thin films by spectroscopic ellipsometry [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2007
We follow in real-time and under controlled conditions the oxidation of the organic semiconductor rubrene grown on SiO_2 using spectroscopic ellipsometry. We derive the complex dielectric function epsilon_1 + i epsilon_2 for pristine and oxidized rubrene showing that the oxidation is accompanied by a significant change of the optical properties, namely

The effect of surface preparation on high temperature oxidation of Ni, Cu and Ni-Cu alloy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In the present paper, the analysis of polishing, grinding and sand-blasting processes on oxidation behavior of nickel, copper and nickel-copper alloy has been investigated. Surface roughness has been measured using two methods: by contact profilometer and by fractal analysis.

Kinetic control for planar oxidation of MoS$_2$ [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Layered transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors oxidize readily in a variety of conditions, and a thorough understanding of this oxide formation is required for the advancement of TMD-based microelectronics. Here, we combine scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) to investigate oxide formation

The solution supramolecular structure of α2 → 8 polysialic acid suggests a structural cause for its low immunogenicity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
α2 → 8 polysialic acid elicits poor immunogenicity. Small‐angle scattering shows a supramolecular structure with parallel‐chain binding, although in different forms at μm and mm calcium. The major histocompatibility complex requires molecular weights around 2000 Da to produce antibodies, and 2000 Da polysialic oligomers will bind in these structures ...

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.
