Characterisation of Taal Volcanic Ash as a Potential Raw Material for the Construction Industry [PDF]
The phreatomagmatic eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas, Philippines, in January 2020 resulted in a massive ash plume covering a large portion of nearby provinces, including Metro Manila.

Nanoscale Phase Separation in Colossal Magnetoresistance Materials: A Lesson for the Cuprates?
A recent vast experimental and theoretical effort in manganites has shown that the colossal magnetoresistance effect can be understood based on the competition of charge-ordered and ferromagnetic phases. The general aspects of the theoretical description

DISCHARGE OXIDE STORAGE CAPACITY AND VOLTAGE LOSS IN LI-AIR BATTERY [PDF]
Air cathodes, where oxygen reacts with Li ions and electrons with discharge oxide stored in their pore structure, are often considered as the most challenging component in nonaqueous Lithium-air batteries.

This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Study on the piezoresistivity of Cr-doped V2O3 thin film for MEMS sensor applications
Cr-doped V2O3 thin film shows a huge resistivity change with controlled epitaxial strain at room temperature as a result of a gradual Mott metal-insulator phase transition with strain.

A Comparison of Order-Disorder in Several Families of Cubic Oxides
Order-disorder on both cation and oxygen sites is a hallmark of fluorite-derived structures, including pyrochlores. Ordering can occur on long- and short-range scales and can result in persistent metastable states.

Interface Roughness Effects in Ultra-Thin Tunneling Oxides [PDF]
Advanced MOSFET for ULSI and novel silicon-based devices require the use of ultrathin tunneling oxides where non-uniformity is often present. We report on our theoretical study of how tunneling properties of ultra-thin oxides are affected by roughness at

Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Possibilities for carbon sequestration in Irish forests. COST E21 Workshop. Contribution of forests and forestry to mitigate greenhouse effects. Joensuu (Finland). 28-30 Sep 2000 [PDF]
Ireland has a rapidly expanding forest estate which covers some 9/ of the land area. It is government policy to increase this to 17/ by the year 2030. Preliminary studies suggest that forestry activities have the potential to contribute significantly to ...

Striped phases in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with long-range Coulomb interaction
We investigate the formation of partially filled domain walls in the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the presence of long-range interaction. Using an unrestricted Gutzwiller variational approach we show that: i) the strong local interaction favors ...
