2-Oxoglutarate derivatives can selectively enhance or inhibit the activity of human oxygenases

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
The human 2-oxoglutarate (2OG) oxygenases FIH and AspH are relevant drug targets. Here, the authors show that synthetic and naturally occurring 2OG derivatives can selectively modulate FIH and AspH activities, suggesting that these compounds may serve as

Characterisation of a Self‐Sufficient Cytochrome P450 Enzyme From the Bacterium Thermosporothrix hazakensis and Its Conversion Into a Peroxygenase

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology
The cytochrome P450 monooxygenase enzymes (CYPs) of the CYP102 family are versatile, self‐sufficient biocatalysts. The archetypal example is CYP102A1 (P450BM3) from the bacterium Bacillus (Priestia) megaterium, and variants of this enzyme can oxidise ...

Combined 5‐aminolevulinic acid and ferric ammonium citrate treatment promotes hair follicle growth by activating dermal papilla cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
5‐Aminolevulinic acid combined with ferric ammonium citrate (5‐ALA/FAC) stimulates dermal papilla cell activity and promotes hair follicle growth. The treatment enhances ERK and AKT signaling, increases hair‐inductive gene expression, and restores dermal papilla function suppressed by dihydrotestosterone and oxidative stress, resulting in enhanced hair

Cutaneous Melanoma Drives Metabolic Changes in the Aged Bone Marrow Immune Microenvironment

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increasingly affects older adults. Our study reveals that melanoma induces changes in iron and lipid levels in the bone marrow, impacting immune cell populations and increasing susceptibility to ferroptosis.

An Engineered Living Material With Pro‐Angiogenic Activity Inducible by Near‐Infrared Light

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
NIR‐responsive engineered living materials (ELMs) for controlled angiogenesis: Near‐infrared (800 nm) light activates engineered probiotic bacteria within alginate‐based living materials to secrete a blood vessel‐regenerating protein. The released protein promotes pro‐angiogenic effects in endothelial networks and chick chorioallantoic membranes.

Characterization and Expression Analysis of Heme Oxygenase Genes from

open access: yesBioinformatics and Biology Insights, 2019
Heme oxygenases (HOs) have a major role in phytochrome chromophore biosynthesis, and chromophores in turn have anti-oxidant properties. Plant heme oxygenases are divided into the HO1 sub-family comprising HO1, HO3, and HO4, and the HO2 sub-family, which ...

Controlled depolymerization of cellulose by light-driven lytic polysaccharide oxygenases

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Lytic polysaccharide (mono)oxygenases (LPMOs) perform oxidative cleavage of polysaccharides. Here, the authors showed that the light-driven activity of LPMOs is dependent on hydrogen peroxide availability and can be controlled via the light intensity ...

A Computer Simulation Insight into the Formation of Apocarotenoids: Study of the Carotenoid Oxygenases BCO1 and BCO2 and Their Interaction with Putative Substrates

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
Carotenoids are isoprenoid pigments, and sources of vitamin A in humans. The first metabolic pathway for their synthesis is mediated by the enzymes β,β-carotene-15,15′-dioxygenase (BCO1) and β,β-carotene-9′,10′-dioxygenase (BCO2), which cleave ...

Oxygen and ROS Delivery for Infected Wound Healing and Future Prospects

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Bacterial infection is a major driver of delayed wound healing and postsurgical readmissions; with rising antibiotic resistance, solid peroxide–releasing biomaterials offer sustained delivery of ROS/O2 for antimicrobial control and microenvironmental modulation.
