Vivax malaria in Duffy-negative patients shows invariably low asexual parasitaemia: implication towards malaria control in Ethiopia

open access: yesMalaria Journal, 2022
Background The increase in detections of Plasmodium vivax infection in Duffy-negative individuals in Africa has challenged the dogma establishing the unique P. vivax Duffy Binding Protein-Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (PvDBP-DARC) pathway used by

Comparative clinico-haematological analysis in young Zebu cattle experimentally infected with Trypanosoma vivax isolates from tsetse infested and non-tsetse infested areas of Northwest Ethiopia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: Ethiopia, particularly in the Northwest region, is affected by both tsetse and non-tsetse fly transmitted trypanosomosis, with significant impact on livestock productivity. The aim of this study was to determine and compare clinical findings

Comparative evaluation of the attractiveness of new polyethylene screens versus West African tiny target for the control of tsetse flies

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
The material has no significant difference in captures (non‐shiny cotton‐polyester screens vs. the shiny polyethylene screens), but the vertical screen attracted significantly more G. tachinoides for each type of material. Full white horizontal screen was significantly lower than the reference WATT.

Strong Cross‐Reactivity of Anti–Plasmodium falciparum pLDH Monoclonal Antibodies With Plasmodium malariae pLDH in the Abbott Bioline Malaria Ag P.f/P.f/P.v Rapid Diagnostic Test

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives This study aimed to describe the cross‐reactivity of the Abbott Bioline Malaria Ag P.f/P.f/P.v rapid diagnostic test, designed to detect Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, with other Plasmodium species, based on the detection of parasite lactate dehydrogenase enzymes.

First characterization of Plasmodium vivax liver stage antigen (PvLSA) using synthetic peptides

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2014
Background Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread human malaria in tropical and subtropical countries, including the Republic of Korea. Vivax malaria is characterized by hypnozoite relapse and long latency infection by the retained liver stage of P ...

Short‐Course Low‐Dose Primaquine for Radical Cure in G6PD‐Normal Patients in the Pre‐Elimination Context of Nepal

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Plasmodium vivax remains a challenge for malaria elimination in Nepal due to its ability to relapse. Radical cure with primaquine is effective but limited by poor adherence to the standard 14‐day low‐dose regimen. In 2022, the WHO recommended administering the same total dose (3.5 mg/kg) over 7 days to improve adherence.

Transfusion‐transmitted malaria in India: A national survey of epidemiology and testing practices

open access: yesVox Sanguinis, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Objectives Malaria still poses a public health burden in India despite ongoing elimination efforts. Blood donor screening for malaria is mandated in India, yet data on transfusion‐transmitted malaria (TTM) are lacking. We sought to evaluate testing practices for malaria, associated rates of positivity in donors and reported ...

Molecular identification of different trypanosome species and subspecies in tsetse flies of northern Nigeria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT) is caused by several species of trypanosomes including Trypanosoma congolense, T. vivax, T. godfreyi, T. simiae and T. brucei. Two of the subspecies of T. brucei also cause Human African Trypanosomiasis.
