Activation of p38 Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase in Gaucher’s Disease
Gaucher's disease is caused by defects in acid β-glucosidase 1 (GBA1) and has been also proposed as an inflammatory disease. GBA1 cleaves glucosylceramide to form ceramide, an established bioactive lipid, and defects in GBA1 lead to aberrant accumulation in glucosylceramide and insufficient formation of ceramide. We investigated if the pro-inflammatory

Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Phosphatase-1 Is Overexpressed in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and Is an Independent Predictor of Outcome in Patients [PDF]
An increase in the activity of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) has been correlated with a more malignant phenotype in several tumor models in vitro and in vivo. A key regulatory mechanism of the MAPKs [extracellular signal-regulated kinase (

Growth Regulation via p38 Mitogen-activated Protein Kinase in Developing Liver [PDF]
During normal development in the rat, hepatocytes undergo marked changes in the rate of proliferation. We have previously observed transient G(1) growth arrest at term, re-activation of proliferation immediately after birth, and a gradual transition to the quiescent adult hepatocyte phenotype after postnatal day 4. We hypothesized that these changes in

A Novel Zak Knockout Mouse with a Defective Ribotoxic Stress Response
Ricin activates the proinflammatory ribotoxic stress response through the mitogen activated protein 3 kinase (MAP3K) ZAK, resulting in activation of mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) p38 and JNK1/2.

Age-dependent motor dysfunction due to neuron-specific disruption of stress-activated protein kinase MKK7. [PDF]
c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) is a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase family and controls various physiological processes including apoptosis. A specific upstream activator of JNKs is the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 7 (MKK7).

p38-2, a Novel Mitogen-activated Protein Kinase with Distinct Properties [PDF]
Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases are involved in many cellular processes. Here we describe the cloning and characterization of a new MAP kinase, p38-2. p38-2 belongs to the p38 subfamily of MAP kinases and shares with it the TGY phosphorylation motif. The complete p38-2 cDNA was isolated by polymerase chain reaction.

The specificities of small molecule inhibitors of the TGF beta and BMP pathways [PDF]
Small molecule inhibitors of type 1 receptor serine threonine kinases (ALKs1-7), the mediators of TGF beta and BMP signals, have been employed extensively to assess their physiological roles in cells and organisms. While all of these inhibitors have been
