Macrophage Lipid Homeostasis Drives IVDD via a Senescence‐Dependent Impairment of Efferocytosis

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) has been a leading cause of low back pain and lacks disease‐modifying therapies. Although dysregulated disc lipid metabolism is implicated, its impact on the immune microenvironment, particularly macrophages, remains unknown.

Crystallization of the C-terminal domain of the mouse brain cytosolic long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The mammalian long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase, the enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of acyl-CoAs to free fatty acids, contains two fused 4HBT (4-hydroxybenzoyl-CoA thioesterase) motifs.

Identification of three novel mutations of the palmitoyl-protein thioesterase-1 (PPT1) gene in children with neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Mutation, 2000
Eight unrelated children with progressive neurological deterioration and granular osmiophilic deposits (GROD) due to an underlying palmitoyl-protein thioesterase deficiency were analyzed for mutations in the PPT1 gene. Three novel mutations (G118D, Q291X and F84del) were identified.

An innovative hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy approach benefits CLN1 disease in the mouse model

open access: yesEMBO Molecular Medicine, 2023
Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) can establish a long‐lasting microglia‐like progeny in the central nervous system of properly myeloablated hosts. We exploited this approach to treat the severe CLN1 neurodegenerative disorder, which is the

Crystal structure and biochemical analysis of the polyester‐degrading carboxylesterase SM0281 from the symbiotic legume‐associated rhizobacterium Sinorhizobium (Ensifer) meliloti

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
The microbial degradation of synthetic polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is mediated by diverse α/β‐hydrolases, many of which remain poorly characterized. In this study, we investigated the α/β‐hydrolase SM0281 from Sinorhizobium meliloti and found that it exhibits robust carboxylesterase and polyesterase activities toward PET, PCL ...

Combination of Antimalarial and CNS Drugs with Antineoplastic Agents in MCF-7 Breast and HT-29 Colon Cancer Cells: Biosafety Evaluation and Mechanism of Action

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2022
Drug combination and drug repurposing are two strategies that allow to find novel oncological therapies, in a faster and more economical process. In our previous studies, we developed a novel model of drug combination using antineoplastic and different ...

Investigating GERMs: how genotype, environment, and rhizosphere microbiome interactions underlie heat response in maize and sorghum

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 4, Page 2152-2167, August 2026.
Three genotypes – a heat‐resistant maize (Zea mays), a heat‐susceptible maize, and a sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) variety – were grown to the V4 stage in growth chambers under optimal conditions or subjected to heat stress. Plants were grown in soil containing a complex microbial community, or in the same soil with a depleted microbiome.

ZDHHC9‐Mediated Palmitoylation of ACSL4 Drives Ferroptosis in Diabetes Mellitus–Induced Erectile Dysfunction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 42, 28 July 2026.
ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus‐induced erectile dysfunction (DMED) is a highly prevalent complication among diabetic patients; however, its underlying pathogenic mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Metabolic disorder is a hallmark of diabetes, yet its precise contribution to DMED progression is not well defined.
