In dogs, paracetamol at low doses is metabolised to non-toxic metabolites, but these pathways become saturated in overdose, leading to metabolism by other pathways resulting in the production of toxic metabolites.

Paracetamol poisoning: a case study
Intensive and Critical Care Nursing, 1995Over a 1-year period, 24 patients have been admitted to one intensive therapy unit (ITU) with fulminant hepatic failure secondary to paracetamol poisoning. This article reviews one such case and the subsequent management which led to successful transplantation, concentrating on the clinical and nursing implications of the patient's care.
