The Cerebellum, 2002
Cerebellar long-term depression (LTD) is classically observed when climbing fibers, originating from the inferior olive, and parallel fibers, axons of granule cells, are activated repetitively and synchronously. On the basis that the climbing fiber signals errors in motor performance, LTD provides a mechanism of learning whereby inappropriate motor ...

Before attempting to develop ideas on the mode of operation of neuronal circuits in the cerebellar cortex, it is necessary to attempt to understand both the structural-functional correlations of component elements and the mode of operation of the synapses between these elements.

Cerebellar granule cell: ascending axon and parallel fiber
European Journal of Neuroscience, 2006AbstractMorphometric data have indicated that most (> 95%) of the granule cell axonal synapses are located along the parallel fibers. The ascending axons of granule cells, however, exert powerful excitatory effects on the activities of Purkinje cells.

Fiber-image-guide-based bit-parallel optical interconnects
Applied Optics, 1996We propose a scalable bit-parallel optical interconnect method for use in large-bandwidth interprocessor communications. Flexible fiber image guides are used to transmit spatially parallel optical data between a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser array and a photodetector array.

Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 1997
Braitenberg et al.'s proposal, like most previous theories of cerebellar function (see Bower 1997, for review), is fundamentally based on the striking geometric relationship between parallel fibers and Purkinje cells. As in previous models, the current theory assumes that the activation of granule cells results in a “beam” of ...

Measuring parallel fiber length in the rat cerebellum
Brain Research, 1998A new approach was devised to obtain the mean length of parallel fibers in Golgi sections of the rat cerebellum. This method was based on the principle that within a given region of the cerebellum the mean length of parallel fibers should be inversely proportional to the likelihood of spotting the ends of parallel fibers.

Age-related changes in the cerebellum: parallel fibers
Brain Research, 1999Between the ages of 3 and 23 months, the cerebella of NIH Fischer 344 rats lose 30% of the thickness of the molecular layer, 60% of the length of parallel fibers, and 80% of the synaptic varicosities along parallel fibers. Nearly 60% of these synaptic varicosities disappear between 3 and 9 months.

Parallel, fluorous open-tubular chromatography using microstructured fibers
Analytica Chimica Acta, 2011Although commonly used in gas chromatography, open-tubular columns for liquid chromatography have seen their development hindered by a number of factors both theoretical and practical. Requiring small diameters, great lengths and specialized detection systems to achieve a proper chromatographic response, columns of this sort have largely been ignored ...

A constitutive equation for parallel-fibered elastic tissue
Journal of Biomechanics, 1974Abstract A constitutive equation for parallel-fibered elastic tissue is developed in the form of a non-linear hereditary integral. Material constants were determined from relaxation tests and these were used in the constitutive equation to predict results of constant strain rate tests, hysteresis loops and sinusoidal tests.

Electromagnetic-wave scattering at material fiber and parallel fiber system
Journal of Surface Investigation. X-ray, Synchrotron and Neutron Techniques, 2015The scattering of a plane electromagnetic wave at a filamentary target is considered. The obtained expression for the scattering cross-section is used to derive a kinetic equation describing wave propagation in a parallel-fiber bundle. The intensity evolution of radiation propagating in a bundle of straight and bent fibers is considered.
