Disorders of the parathyroid glands

open access: yesJournal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2004
The three calcitropic hormones, parathyroid hormone (PTH), 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol and calcitonin are together responsible for calcium homeostasis in the mammal. Feline PTH is an 84 amino acid, single chain polypeptide with a molecular weight of 9449, which is secreted by the parathyroid glands.

Hyperfunction of Parathyroid Glands

open access: yes, 2014
The parathyroid glands (PTs) chief cells are the most important calcium-sensing cells in the body, able to produce and store parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is modulated by the binding of Ca2+ to calcium-sensing receptors (CaSRs).

Iron Overload: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Monitoring

open access: yesInternational Journal of Laboratory Hematology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Iron overload is associated with significant health risks, underscoring the importance of understanding its pathophysiology as well as establishing accurate diagnostic and monitoring methods. Chronic iron overload is associated with either genetic disorders characterized by excessive iron accumulation (hereditary hemochromatosis), or is ...

About A Rare Cause Of Primary Hyperparathyroidism

open access: yes, 2011
Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroïdism is observed in 35 to 44 subjects/ 100000 persons. The increased production of parathyroid hormones is secondary to primary glandular modifications consisting mainly in adenomas.

Effect of Two Therapeutic Renal Diets on Hormonal and Regulatory Pathways Affecting Calcium Homeostasis in Cats With Early‐Stage Chronic Kidney Disease

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a known risk factor for hypercalcemia in cats. Phosphate‐restricted diets have also been implicated in causing hypercalcemia, in part because phosphate restriction increases the Ca:P ratio. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of two different therapeutic renal foods on ionized (iCa ...

ON THE RELATION OF TETANY TO THE PARATHYROID GLANDS AND TO CALCIUM METABOLISM

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Medicine, 1909
1. Tetany occurs spontaneously in many forms and may also be produced by the destruction of the parathyroid glands. Recent researches tend to demonstrate an intimate relation between the various forms of tetany and relative or absolute insufficiency of ...
