Bitter Melon Polysaccharides Enhance Goblet Cell Function and Mucosal Integrity in DSS‐Induced Colitis Through Microbiota Remodeling

open access: yesFood Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Bitter melon polysaccharides (BMPs), a key bioactive component of bitter melon, exhibit a range of biological activities including gut microbiota regulation, immune modulation, and antioxidant activity. Based on previous evidence of its protective effect on the colonic mucus barrier under high‐fat‐diet condition, this study evaluated the ...

Antioxidant Activity and Inhibition of Carbohydrate Hydrolyzing Enzymes by Underutilized Parts From Some Plant‐Based Foods and Their Effect on Postprandial Hyperglycemia

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The underutilized parts viz: pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels showed promising antioxidant and inhibition of α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase activities (IC50 values ≤ 100 μg/mL). Similarly, pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels reduced postprandial hyperglycemia in sucrose‐ and maltose‐induced hyperglycemia in rats.

Engineering compact Physalis peruviana (goldenberry) to promote its potential as a global crop

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Goldenberry (Physalis peruviana) produces sweet, nutritionally rich berries, yet like many minor crops, is cultivated in limited geographical regions and has not been a focus of breeding programs for trait enhancement. Leveraging knowledge of plant architecture‐related traits from related species, we used CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated gene editing to generate a

Epistemic Objects and Tools on the School Grounds: Addressing Plant Blindness and Knowledge Construction

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Plants mediate the supply of energy and matter for all animals, including human beings yet we are faced with “plant blindness” whereby we pay limited attention to and accord little value to plants. Plant blindness is evident in school curricula whereby students have limited opportunities to learn about plants.
