Commonly prescribed β-lactam antibiotics induce C. trachomatis persistence/stress in culture at physiologically relevant concentrations.

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2014
Chlamydia trachomatis, the most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease agent worldwide, enters a viable, non-dividing and non-infectious state (historically termed persistence and more recently referred to as the chlamydial stress response) when ...

Toxicity of the Penicillins [PDF]

open access: yesPostgraduate Medical Journal, 1964
THE absence of direct toxicity is one of the most remarkable properties of the penicillin molecule; that is to say, the penicillin molecule as we know it and as we should use it. If you try hard enough, you can make it toxic by altering it or abusing it, as I shall try to show later.

Screening and epitope characterization of Nidogen‐2‐specific nanobodies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Camel immunization and phage display were employed to generate high‐affinity VHH nanobodies against Nidogen‐2. After library construction, biopanning, ELISA screening, sequencing, and recombinant expression, selected nanobodies were purified and characterized, leading to the preliminary exploration of a nanobody‐based sandwich ELISA for specific ...

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Evaluation of Beta-lactam antibacterials and penicillins consumption [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: The beta-lactam family of antibiotics includes the majority of the most heavily used antibacterials in clinical medicine. They are important, both historically and currently, because of their effectiveness and generally low toxicity.
