Resetting the neurohormonal balance in heart failure (HF). the relevance of the natriuretic peptide (NP) system to the clinical management of patients with HF [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The natriuretic peptide (NP) system, which includes atrial natriuretic peptide, B-type natriuretic peptide, and C-type natriuretic peptide, has an important role in cardiovascular homeostasis, promoting a number of physiological effects including ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Design and Binding Affinity of Antisense Peptides for Snake Venom Neutralization

open access: yesMolecules
Snakebites are a significant public health problem in many tropical and subtropical regions, causing extensive morbidity and mortality. Traditional snake antivenoms face multiple challenges, including allergenicity, high production costs, and logistical ...

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Discovery of a Potent Antimicrobial Peptide Through Rational Design: A New Frontier in Pathogen Control

open access: yesBiomolecules
The increasing circulation of multi-drug-resistant pathogens, coupled with the sluggish development of new antibiotics, is weakening our capacity to combat human infections, resulting in elevated death tolls.

Continual reproduction of self-assembling oligotriazole peptide nanomaterials. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Autocatalytic chemical reactions, whereby a molecule is able to catalyze its own formation from a set of precursors, mimic nature's ability to generate identical copies of relevant biomolecules, and are thought to have been crucial for the origin of life.
