Biology and function of pericytes in the vascular microcirculation

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, 2023
Pericytes are the main cellular components of tiny arteries and capillaries. Studies have found that pericytes can undergo morphological contraction or relaxation under stimulation by cytokines, thus affecting the contraction and relaxation of ...

Loss of capillary pericytes and the blood–brain barrier in white matter in poststroke and vascular dementias and Alzheimer’s disease

open access: yesBrain Pathology, 2020
White matter (WM) disease is associated with disruption of the gliovascular unit, which involves breach of the blood–brain barrier (BBB). We quantified pericytes as components of the gliovascular unit and assessed their status in vascular and other ...

Pericytes contribute to the islet basement membranes to promote beta-cell gene expression

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
β-Cells depend on the islet basement membrane (BM). While some islet BM components are produced by endothelial cells (ECs), the source of others remains unknown.

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Protective effects of inhibiting pericyte ferroptosis on pulmonary vascular barrier function in septic rats

open access: yes陆军军医大学学报, 2022
Objective To investigate the role of pericyte ferroptosis in the injury of pulmonary vascular barrier in septic rats and identify the protective effect of ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1), a ferroptosis inhibitor, on pulmonary vascular barrier function.

Inhibition of Connexin43 hemichannels impairs spatial short-term memory without affecting spatial working memory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Astrocytes are active players in higher brain function as they can release gliotransmitters, which are essential for synaptic plasticity. Various mechanisms have been proposed for gliotransmission, including vesicular mechanisms as well as non-vesicular ...

High Glucose Induces the Loss of Retinal Pericytes Partly via NLRP3-Caspase-1-GSDMD-Mediated Pyroptosis

open access: yesBioMed Research International, 2020
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the hallmark complications of diabetes and a leading cause of vision loss in adults. Retinal pericyte death seems to be a prominent feature in the onset of DR.

DDX3X induces mesenchymal transition of endothelial cells by disrupting BMPR2 signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Elevated DDX3X expression led to downregulation of BMPR2, a key regulator of endothelial homeostasis and function. Our co‐immunoprecipitation assays further demonstrated a molecular interaction between DDX3X and BMPR2. Notably, DDX3X promoted lysosomal degradation of BMPR2, thereby impairing its downstream signaling and facilitating endothelial‐to ...

Pericytes in castration-resistant prostate cancer associated with disease progression and immunotherapy response: insights from single-cell analysis

open access: yesCancer Cell International
Background The current immunotherapeutic strategies yield limited therapeutic benefits in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) due to its immunologically “cold” tumor milieu.

Unraveling the Molecular Mechanisms of Glioma Recurrence: A Study Integrating Single‐Cell and Spatial Transcriptomics

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Glioma recurrence severely impacts patient prognosis, with current treatments showing limited efficacy. Traditional methods struggle to analyze recurrence mechanisms due to challenges in assessing tumor heterogeneity, spatial dynamics, and gene networks.
