Peripheral circulation in the newborn: Interaction of peripheral blood flow, blood pressure, blood volume, and blood viscosity [PDF]

open access: yesPediatric Research, 1979
Peripheral blood flow and systolic blood pressure (strain gauge plethysmograph), blood volume (Evans blue), and whole blood viscosity (cone-plate viscometer) have been measured in 66 sick premature and full-term infants 6 to 144 hours of age. Blood flow and blood volume were moderately decreased in the infants with respiratory distress.

Pan-Cancer Epigenetic Biomarker Selection from Blood Samples Using SAS [PDF]

open access: yesMWSUG 2018 conference proceedings, 2018
A key focus in current cancer research is the discovery of cancer biomarkers that allow earlier detection with high accuracy and lower costs for both patients and hospitals. Blood samples have long been used as a health status indicator, but DNA methylation signatures in blood have not been fully appreciated in cancer research.

Balance of microtubule stiffness and cortical tension determines the size of blood cells with marginal band across species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The fast blood stream of animals is associated with large shear stresses. Consequently, blood cells have evolved a special morphology and a specific internal architecture allowing them to maintain their integrity over several weeks. For instance, non-mammalian red blood cells, mammalian erythroblasts and platelets have a peripheral ring of microtubules,

Oscillations in a maturation model of blood cell production [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2004
In this paper we use a continuous model to describe the development of a single cell lineage following the committal of stem cells. Three separate controls are implemented in the model, namely the proliferative control of stem cells, the proliferative control of developing blast cells, and the peripheral control of stem cell committal by circulating ...

Local nature of 0.1 Hz oscillations in microcirculation is confirmed by imaging photoplethysmography [PDF]

open access: yesBiomedical Signal Processing and Control, 100, 107188 (2025)
Low-frequency oscillations in the human circulatory system is important for basic physiology and practical applications in clinical medicine. Our objective was to study which mechanism (central or local) is responsible for changes in blood flow fluctuations at around 0.1 Hz.

Numerical modelling of a peripheral arterial stenosis using dimensionally reduced models and kernel methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this work, we consider two kinds of model reduction techniques to simulate blood flow through the largest systemic arteries, where a stenosis is located in a peripheral artery i.e. in an artery that is located far away from the heart. For our simulations we place the stenosis in one of the tibial arteries belonging to the right lower leg (right post

Caffeine and Peripheral Blood Flow [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Medical Reviews and Reports, 2020
Caffeine is the drug of choice for adults of the world. It is commonly found in the favorite beverages they consume such as coffee, energy drinks, soft drinks and tea. The caffeine molecule is a decorative sculpture that helps visitors identify the recently-constructed Chemistry and Chemical Biology Building on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University,

Crowdsourced human-based computational approach for tagging peripheral blood smear sample images from Sickle Cell Disease patients using non-expert users [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports 14.1 (2024): 1201
In this paper, we present a human-based computation approach for the analysis of peripheral blood smear (PBS) images images in patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). We used the Mechanical Turk microtask market to crowdsource the labeling of PBS images.
