Lipid metabolism of Periplaneta americana L. during embryogenesis
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, 1966Abstract 1. 1. During development the weight of oothecae of the American cockroach decreased by 25 per cent, 17 per cent being due to water loss, the remainder largely to lipid catabolism. 2. 2. The major lipid fractions were separated by silicic acid column chromatography and their constituents identified and quantitated by thin layer ...

Aspects of juvenile hormone metabolism in Periplaneta americana (L.)
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 1976Abstract 1. 1. 3H-(C-18)-Cecropia juvenile hormone (JH) and its major metabolites JH-diol and JH-acid, were found in hemolymph, fat body and gut after injection of JH into adult male Periplaneta americana. 2. 2. Metabolites more polar than JH-acid accumulated in the gut as JH breakdown proceeded. 3. 3. Homogenates of both fat body and gut

Cellulase in the cockroach, with special reference to Periplaneta americana (L.)
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1965Abstract Cellulase occurs in the American cockroach and originates in two foci: the salivary glands and the lumen of the midgut and caeca. The salivary glands are the only tissue of the alimentary tract to secrete cellulase, whereas the microflora generates it in the gut.

Pacemaker for tracheal ventilation in the cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.)
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1967Abstract Previous attempts to identify respiratory pacemakers in insects have relied primarily upon cord-sectioning experiments. In this investigation electrophysiological techniques were used to locate the pacemaker in isolated and semi-isolated entire cords.

Diurnal Rhythms in Periplaneta americana L.
Nature, 1954IN the cockroach Blatta orientalis there appears, in both laboratory experiments1 and in natural infestations2, a rhythm of activity under normal conditions of light and darkness taking the form of a burst of activity in the early part of the night, mainly before midnight, and a quiescent period in the later part of the night and during the day.

Studies on insect (Periplaneta americana L.) phosphofructokinase
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, 1968Abstract 1. 1. The presence of phosphofructokinase activity in different tissues from the cockroach ( Periplaneta americana ) has been investigated. 2. 2. The coxal muscles enzyme was studied at different F6P concentrations, and an apparent K m of 6·9 × 10 −5 M was calculated. 3. 3.

Cardioaccelerator Release in Periplaneta americana (L)
Science, 1968Focal electrical stimulation of the brain of Periplaneta americana evokes the release of a factor with high cardioaccelerator activity. Results of extirpation of components of the retrocerebral complex from an isolated head preparation imply that the corpus cardiacum is the critical component of this system.

The cuticular lipids of the cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.)
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1963Abstract The wax obtained by chloroform extraction of cast skins of Periplaneta americana has been analysed. After separation by chromatography on silicic acid and alumina and by chemical means, individual fractions were investigated by infra-red spectroscopy and gas chromatography.

Energy balance in Periplaneta americana L.
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1971Abstract 1. 1. Energy extraction and conversion efficiencies were investigated at 20°, 29° and 35°C with protein and carbohydrate diets in Periplaneta americana L. 2. 2. Energy extraction efficiency was found to be independent of temperature and sex, but was dependent on quantity of food below a critical food level of 90 mg/g animal per day.

Sterol metabolism during embryogenesis of Periplaneta americana (L.)
Journal of Insect Physiology, 1966Abstract The qualitative and quantitative metabolism of sterol and sterol esters was studied in the developing embryos of Periplaneta americana . Adult females contained 2·7 mg of sterol which consisted almost exclusively of cholesterol. The sterol content of the developing embryos remained constant though the proportion of esterified sterol ...
