Bipath persistence

open access: yesJapan Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics
AbstractIn persistent homology analysis, interval modules play a central role in describing the birth and death of topological features across a filtration. In this work, we extend this setting, and propose the use of bipath persistent homology, which can be used to study the persistence of topological features across a pair of filtrations connected at

Impacts of Global Transcriptional Regulators on Persister Metabolism

open access: yes, 2015
Bacterial persisters are phenotypic variants with an extraordinary capacity to tolerate antibiotics, and they are hypothesized to be a main cause of chronic and relapsing infections.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

Tolerant, Growing Cells from Nutrient Shifts Are Not Persister Cells

open access: yes, 2017
There is much controversy about the metabolic state of cells that are tolerant to antibiotics, known as persister cells. In this opinion piece, we offer an explanation for the discrepancy seen: some laboratories are studying metabolically active and ...

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Persister cells of C. albicans are committed to energy storage.

open access: yes, 2018
Several enzymes of energy storage pathways are up-regulated in persister cells (indicated in green), whereas glycolysis is down-regulated (indicated in red), suggesting that C. albicans persister cells are adapted to the absence of glucose. Icl1 and Mls1

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Analyzing Persister Physiology with Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting

open access: yes, 2016
Bacterial persisters are phenotypic variants that exhibit an impressive ability to tolerate antibiotics. Persisters are hypothesized to cause relapse infections, and therefore, understanding their physiology may lead to novel therapeutics to treat ...

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...
