Memory B-cell persistence is independent of persisting immunizing antigen

Nature, 2000
Immunological memory in the antibody system is generated in T-cell-dependent responses and carried by long-lived memory B cells that recognize antigen by high-affinity antibodies. But it remains controversial whether these B cells represent true 'memory' cells (that is, their maintenance is independent of the immunizing antigen), or whether they are a ...

Combatting bacterial persister cells

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 2015
ABSTRACTMost bacterial cells lead lives of quiet desperation in biofilms, combatting stress; yet, their prevalence attests to their ability to alter gene regulation to cope with myriad insults. Since biofilm bacteria are faced with starvation and other environmental stress (e.g., antibiotics from competitors, oxidative stress from host immune systems),

PERSISTENCE OF BLOOD CELLS IN URINE

Acta Medica Scandinavica, 1968
Abstract In clinical work the stability of blood cells in urine is a point of practical importance. Provided bacterial contamination can be avoided, erythrocytes and leucocytes are well preserved in acidic urine of a specific gravity higher than 1.008‐1.011 for at least 24 hours. Whether sterile specimens are kept at room temperature, in a refrigerator,

Nucleolar persistence in embryonal carcinoma cells

Experimental Cell Research, 1981
Abstract A series of embryonal carcinoma (EC) lines were found to have nucleoli which persisted through metaphase and anaphase in 60–88% of cells. When these cells differentiated, either spontaneously or upon chemical induction with retinoic acid or dimethylacetamide, the level of nucleolar persistence dropped to under 20%.

Phenomenological Approach to Cancer Cell Persistence

Physical Review Letters, 2022
Drug persistence is a phenomenon by which a small percentage of cancer cells survive the presentation of targeted therapy by transitioning to a quiescent state. Eventually some of these persister cells can transition back to an active growing state and give rise to resistant tumors.

PERSISTENT POLYCLONAL B-CELL LYMPHOCYTOSIS

Acta Clinica Belgica, 2002
We present a case of persistent polyclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (PPBL). This syndrome is characterized by a persistent lymphocytosis with circulating atypical binucleated lymphocytes. The patient had serological evidence of a previous EBV infection, had raised polyclonal serum IgM levels and was a heavy smoker. No malignancy was detected.

A Persistent Lymphoid Cell Population in the Thymus

Nature New Biology, 1973
The mouse thymus contains cells which, when teased out of the organ, have various described properties. A proportion of them can respond in vitro to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)1; whole thymocyte populations transferred into irradiated adult or neonatally thymectomized mice confer some restoration of immunological competence2; thymocytes can be activated ...

Persistent polyclonal B-cell lymphocytosis

Leukemia Research, 1994
We document a case of persistent lymphocytosis in which the characteristic binucleated circulating lymphocytes were shown immunologically to be polyclonal B-cells. Cytogenetic and molecular studies failed to show a clonal population. A review of the literature on this rare condition, persistent polyclonal B-cell lymphocytosis, highlights an association

Persistent infections “interfere” with B cells

Science, 2016
Infectious Diseases Certain pathogens, including HIV, hepatitis virus, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), cause persistent infections that are often associated with suboptimal antibody responses. Fallet et al. , Moseman et al. , and Sammicheli et al.

Multidrug Tolerance of Biofilms and Persister Cells

Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology, 2008
Bacterial populations produce a small number of dormant persister cells that exhibit multidrug tolerance. All resistance mechanisms do essentially the same thing: prevent the antibiotic from hitting a target. By contrast, tolerance apparently works by shutting down the targets.
