Persister cells and the riddle of biofilm survival
Biochemistry (Moscow), 2005This review addresses a long-standing puzzle in the life and death of bacterial populations--the existence of a small fraction of essentially invulnerable cells. Bacterial populations produce persisters, cells that neither grow nor die in the presence of bactericidal agents, and thus exhibit multidrug tolerance (MDT).

Antigenic Material: Persistence in Hypersensitive Cells
Science, 1963Radioactivity derived from injections of tritiated tetanus toxin was observed in lymphocytes and macrophages for as long as 9 months after injection into immunized mice. These labeled cells became highly vacuolated and attracted eosinophils and lymphocytes when the animals were reinjected with specific antigen.

Persistent polyclonal B-cell lymphocytosis
Blood, 2011![Figure][1] A 45-year-old woman had asthenia, diffuse myalgias, and mild splenomegaly. Her history included smoking and no evidence of viral illness. There was no family history of lymphoid disorders.

Persister Cells in Biofilm Associated Infections
2014Persister cells are phenotypic variants of a bacterial population that display tolerance to killing by bactericidal antibiotics. In this chapter we discuss the formation of persisters and their role in biofilm associated infections.

Transposon persistence and control in germ cells
Current Opinion in Genetics & DevelopmentTransposons, or 'jumping genes', are ubiquitous genomic elements with the dual capacity to drive evolutionary innovation and disrupt genome integrity through gene mutation and DNA damage. Their activity is particularly significant in germline cells, which transmit genetic material to the next generation.

CD4+ T cells persist with their Eomes
ImmunitySimilar to CD8+ T cells, stem-like CD4+ T cells sustain responses to tumors, chronic infections, and inflammation. In this issue of Immunity, Wen et al. and Agesta et al. reveal EOMES as a critical regulator of stem-like CD4+ T cell maintenance and differentiation.
