CHROMOSOME NUMBERS IN THE PHAEOPHYCEAE

Canadian Journal of Genetics and Cytology, 1967
Introduction The first chromosome numbers in the Phaeophyceae were recorded at the turn of the present century by Farmer and Willian~s (24, 25) and Strasburger (100) for some of the Fucaceae, and Mottier (66) and IVilliams (113) for Dictyotn dicbotonm, a member of the Dictoyotaceae. Dictyota dichotoma (Phaeophyceae): Identification of the Sperm Attractant

Science, 1981
Freshly released eggs of the marine brown alga Dictyota dichotoma secrete a substance that attracts spermatozoids. This compound has been identified as n -butyl-cyclohepta-2,5-diene. It is closely related to attractants in several other brown algae and confirms that a relation exists between ...

Plant regeneration from protoplasts of Sphacelaria (Phaeophyceae)

Planta, 1988
Protoplast were isolated from a filamentous brown alga, Sphacelaria sp. (Sphacelariales, Phaeophyta), using alginate-lyases extracted from marine molluscs, and commercial pectinase and cellulase. Yields were about 4000 protoplasts per gram of fresh tissue.

The family Ectocarpaceae currently contains the simplest, and probably also the most primitive, members of the Phaeophyceae. The thallus form of every species is a heterotrichous filament with little or no structural modification. Some species may possess quite extensive cortication of axial filaments by adventitious rhizoids but advanced ...
