Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

An examination of the comparative ability of primary care health professionals in the recognition and treatment of a range of dermatological conditions

open access: yes, 2013
Background Recent data suggest that skin problems were the most common reason for patients visiting their GP in the UK. Healthcare professionals such as practice nurses and community pharmacists represent potential alternative sources of advice for ...

Feasibility and acceptability of an overdose prevention intervention delivered by Community Pharmacists for patients prescribed opioids for chronic non-cancer pain

open access: yes, 2023
There have been increases in the prescribing of high strength opioids for chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) but CNCP patients perceive themselves as being at low risk of opioid overdose and generally have limited overdose awareness.

Potential clinical impact of pharmaceutical interventions in an interprofessional medication management program

open access: yesExploratory Research in Clinical and Social Pharmacy
Introduction: Medication reviews (MR) can improve medication safety, especially when followed by continuous medication management (MM). The interprofessional MM program ARMIN resulted in a significantly reduced mortality risk.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Hospital pharmacists' views on collaborative pharmacist prescribing

open access: yes, 2013
In 2008, Weeks et al. published the results of a postal survey, which explored the views of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia’s (SHPA) members on collaborative prescribing, and the extent of de facto prescribing in their institution. Since

The Conscience of a Pharmacist [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 2019
The purpose of this commentary is to attempt to provide some insight into conscience-clause cases from the perspective of a pharmacist and an academician. Health professionals, including pharmacists, have a social contract with the patients we serve in which the patients give us a level of status not given to non-professionals, and, in return, we agree

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Pharmacists face legal burden

open access: yes, 2007
The changing practice of pharmacy has the potential to impact on the legal liability of pharmacists. This is because of a bigger focus on the provision of patient care services.
